Can anyone confirm what the minimum legal size front plate you can have on a 97Import
 

As title, been having a little look on the site, but seem to be lots of different sizes.

i just lost it, in the windscreen nw

i use a motorbike sized plate..
just make sure the lettering is the right size..
as long as that is ok,you should have no bother...

Cheers mate, I've actually just stuck a facelift bumper on her so want one of those small long ones if anyone can help with the size for a v5/v6 front bumper plate?

no idea ive seen what your after a letterbox size, dont think they are legal tho

as matt says those plates are illegal...
just not worth the risk

I have a 3/4 size plate on my car and have run one on two of my last imprezas and touch wood I have not had any issues with the police etc but that is not to say I won't but I don't drive to draw any attention to myslef. Although they are ilegal and fancyplate.com do state thy they are for show use only, so it's up to you

Subaru's can fit a standard size numberplate on both the front and rear, using anything else is illegal and you can be done for it, have a nice loooooooooong bit of reading on numberplates somewhere (courtesy of hm gov).
So all those with bike plates, be warned, you can get pulled and done for incorrectly displaying your number plate.

that is not including imports.!!
as i work in a company that supplys plates..
there is no law on plate size its just txt size and spacing...
and mine is the same size as what is supplyed by mitsi for the evo(legal in this country)!!
jdm cars do not come with oblong plates...
mine supplyed by dvla were about 2 inch longer each side
and the new law states that you must now have a bsau stamp and address and post code on it from the people that supplyed it...
when you buy them now you have to supply v5 and driving licence,as you have to put these details on dvla data base,before you can print them..
so motorbike size ones are legal..

Wish I'd known about the size of the plate didn't matter earlier and it was just the spacing. Went and ordered one from Craigs plates earlier. Damn:mad:

Incorrect that does include imports if a standard plate can be fitted, ie subaru's, on cars like the nissan Pulsar or Mitsubishi Evo's where they dont have the standard size fittings then a square numberplate can be fitted, lovely bit on a government website about it ;)
Posted that before, even shows you the size numberplates and types that can be fitted.

I also heard about the above by the trade, regarding import cars.

I was stopped with a smaller plate when passing through an ANPR roadside sting set-up. The traffic copper was basically going to give me a fixed penalty fine and said that they could endorse with three points as well. I asked about the import "bit" and he said it was total crap..... the same regulations apply for a UK registered vehicle, regardless of it being an import. Luckily I had the standard plate on the seat and managed to stick this over the other smaller front plate. That stopped me the three points. I then virtually begged him that the smaller plate would never be going back on, so he agreed to let me off, just as he was about to write the ticket out for the fine.

Suffice to say I can't be arsed with the risk of getting caught, so the standard plate has/will be staying on.

well i wont argue......thats what the dvla supplyed so let them argue it out...
and my dvla paper work says import..so import plates were fitted
as law does not state "where it has to be fitted"
as for the anpr..they are based next to where i live and never got pulled by them...
maybe it's the car or the way its driven that gets you pulled.......
and had same size plate on all my imports for 9 years and never pulled because of them.
and see them most mornings and afternoons,and still never had a problem......

I am only stating what happened to me and what the Police said at the time (earlier this year). If you think I was going to state that x,y,z off the internet told me it was alright, so tough ****, just as he was writing the ticket out you can think again! :D Since I was driving at sub 30mph in a built up area, I doubt very much it was anything to do with my driving! ;)

Why don't you pull it next time to an ANPR set-up and ask them what the legalities are around a non-standard number plate and if they are legal if on a UK registered car, but imported. Regardless of whether you have been pulled before or not, it would be interested to hear what they say.

Ah - it was updated in 2001 ;-)

I looked into this in 2001 and there was no size requirement as long as the plate was on the front of the car and needed to be virtually vertical - so a sticker on the bonnet is/was definately illegal as are those number plates you see inside the car under the visor!
It was/used to be part of the MOT test - then again its so easy to get an MOT these days that the rules are irrelevant for those purposes

The law back then stated that the height needed to be 79mm (cant remember width) and that there needed to be 11mm inbetween each number/letter

The plate size was irrelevant

My numbers are just a bit smaller than the legal limit and the plate size is only about 5mm more either side - i.e. its much smaller than std

Been stopped twice and I persuaded the Police that my number plate was 'within the law' and I even told them the law - to which one asked if I had a tape measure! - obviously I dont

but the law changed again last year,and my plates are within the dvla regulations,who set the plate size and what is required...
thats why i never get any trouble,if the filth want to question it with me,i'd argue it ,and tell them i'm licenced from the dvla to make plates to regulations...
then watch them argue with the people who set the standards..

From my memory it hasnt changed since 2001, and if there is space to fit a standard UK sized number plate (which there is on the Impreza) then one should be fitted that complies with BS AU 145D.

It is only imports that cant fit a standard size UK plate that are allowed a slightly smaller plate.

There is no legal size of plate - but the characters have to be the legal size and spacing, with a set size of border around it. I have a square one fitted over my passenger side foglight cover. I did find a DVLA site with the legal sizes on and cut my original plate down to size to just leave the legal minimum border. Just looked and can't find this site now - seems its changed to just give you names of approved suppliers in your area .
