piston slap can be common on 97/98 cars i had it on a version4 type r with no problems in 14 months after 5mins wasnt there .Only cure rebuild or turn the ice up

never leave a car stationary to warm up. you are doing more harm. you want to get the engine out of the cold start and upto runnign temp as soon as possible, been mechanically sympathetic of course.
i have pistonslap on mine. i dont use the turbo for a mile or so and then its foot down!

mine is a 94 wrx by the way. funny cos i never thought the pre 96 cars had piston slap, only the 97/98 cars. mine is low miles too...49000

I've got the same issue on mine, 97 sti, bit of piston slap when cold (down to forged pistons I think) but no trouble really. I've got used to it now. I just turn the key & drive, no waiting about - tho I do keep it off boost until its warmed up

edited to add - 90k miles approx on it, so don't think its a mileage issue either tbh

I drive off immediately but stay under 2-2.5k and very gentle throttle openings until the oil hits 80C or so, and the oil doesn't do that for a good two miles or so after the water temp gauge gets into the normal zone.

Drive off straight away, just turn the radio up a bit. Wait a couple of miles before giving it rice. Slappy from the day I bought it and it's just passed 140,000miles so due to blow any day now :)

im pretty anal, wahay,i wait a few mins before leaving from a cold start, dont bother if its been driven in the last few hrs tho,but from overnight,i annoy the neigbours for a few minutes

edit to say i too have piston slap, hence the waiting to watm a few mins,if i just drive off from cold, its very apparant it has the slap !!!
