Painting calipers - Hammerite or Halfords caliper paint?

I'm in the process of gringing all the rust from a pair of 4 pot calipers which I'm planning to fit as an upgrade for the 2 pots on the car.

Getting all the rust off has been a challenge, and I know that there will be areas that I just can't get rid of due to access. In view of this I'm planning to paint them with Hammerite 'Straight To Rust'. Is this a good choice? Will it be affected by the heat generated when braking? Would the Halfords caliper paint be better?

On the same subject, I'm also assuming that painting the areas of the caliper body which act as sealing faces for the outer dust seals (the ones held on with steel clips) would be a bad idea?

Any advice much appreciated as always!

use the proper caliper paint cuz its for high temps therefor it will last :)

you can buy a sand blasting attachment fer some pressure washers,or better still get em sand blasted proffesionally an use proper caliper paint.
P.s yer right about protecting the caliper face from paint.but that isnt hard!

Thanks for the advice. Just another thought; what about the high temperature engine paint?

bodgeit, have you used one of these pressure washer attachments? I was looking at them, but found mixed reviews as to their effectiveness.

it's a no-brainer: Hammerite comes in more colours, is easier to use, faster drying, better at covering, and loads cheaper.

I've used it on every caliper I've ever painted and had NO problems on any, ranging from the Scoob, running 300+bhp, to an old Clio, to a Clio 197 Sport to the lad's Corsa.

No, sorry bud! never tried it! There must be someone near you who can sandblast/beadblast though,it wont be expensive. Try google. Its always best to re-build the calipers while there not fitted to the car, spesh if its more than a few years old!

Completly agree, My rears were painted 4 years and still look good, So much easier and cheaper than the caliper paint, which is very thick

Thanks for the advice everyone! I decided to go with the Hammerite, since my local Halfords didn't have any red caliper paint in stock and having done a search I've not read of anyone having problems with it on calipers. If it sticks to the calipers like it sticks to my fingers it should be pretty good!

bodgeit, yes I'm doing a partial rebuild, cleaning up the tops of the pistons where the dust seals go and replacing the dust seals! I don't think the inner seals need doing as the pistons slide smoothly.

interesting, i would of thought the hammerite would peel off with the heat of the calipers, obviously not !!

i used the blue caliper paint, it is very thick but hides the very badly machined 4 pots well, they must be made of rust attracting additives is all i can say,had them blasted for £20
as i too had trouble getting all the cack off them

Calipers look nice............why not touch up the centre of the disc with Hammerite silver?:D

thought about it but the amount of brake dust the redstuff pads give off leaving it black is best

Tried the caliper paint and hammerite. Hammerite was so much easier to apply and it looked better. Even had a rear caliper stick on, Totally cooked the pads, Smoke pouring out of it. No affect on the hammerite.
