prodrive suspension on 99 uk, to hard!

Hello all,

Im really after some advice on what to do with the suspension on my 1999 uk turbo.

It has the prodrive suspension fitted which consists of bilstein struts and eibach springs which lowers the car 35mm at the front and 25mm at the rear which is great but.... it is way to hard for anything other than smooth tarmac or using the car hardly ever and putting up with it, is it supposed to be this hard!?

The other half really likes the car but doesn't really like the ride as theres no suspension travel hardly at all, i daren't even think of taking my 6 week old boy for a ride for fear of rattling him to death!

What are my options? im really hoping i can fit some softer springs rather than replace the whole suspension?

Any help would much appreciated, matt:)

anybody?

Should be easy enough - switch to standard spec UK-Turbo shocks and springs, sell your STI/Prodrive springs and shocks, and pocket the difference (you ought to come out £100 - £200 ahead, if you shop around and make a good sale).

I didnt think the Prodrive suspension dropped the car anywhere near as much as that
Oh well will have to do some digging ;)

Car holds the road really well with the suspension fitted and anti lift kit, drop links etc, but when things get bumpy its a bit of a nightmare, it actually hurts when i hit a big bump in the road, all i really need is some softer springs and would like to keep the bilstein shocks if posssible:)

cheers matt.

Ah it could be your other mods that are causing the problem then :( the prodrive spring/suspension kit is normally very absorbant when your going over the rough stuff :)

been in this car as its a mate of mine, the springs are very short and really does crash out,i have tein coilovers and its way harder than mine, the springs are blue in colour, someone must know of some good spring make that they are running to replace these with????????????????????????

TonyBurns 22 August 2009 06:09 PM

The standard springs are Eibach, they shouldnt crash out and they are very absorbant, its the other mods that have probably naffed it up :( as cars like the RB5 WR run these without issues :)

Agree with Tony here, i had the Prodrive suspension with Eibach springs on my RB5 and i thought it was fantastic, really good on the bumpy roads i live on, i only changed it because i wanted to go lower than 20mm which is what the Prodrive setup lowers by approx.

I fitted H+R 50mm springs and even then the car wasnt crashy or harsh at all....i would say that maybe you have uprated anti roll bars and the droplinks on the hardest setting on the bar which may be making your car very stiff and jerky, which as you say would only be any use on very flat tar or track.

I honestly cant see how the eibach springs are hard at all matey, i sold mine to a mate and he loved them too, just not low enough though for him either so he went for the H+R's :luxhello:

Im now rnning AST coilovers, antilift kit, drop links, adj roll bars etc set on the middle setting and even yet the car is not harsh or rough....before changing springs/shocks, i would investigate what other suspension mods that may have been fitted to the car in the past by a previous owner perhaps :Suspiciou

car has yellow bilstein shocks with blue front springs, standared anti-roll bars, uprated front and back droplinks,(whiteline)and whiteline antilift kit,the springs are defo the issue as when you look at them there is hardley any gaps between the coils let alone when on the move over bumps, there is no movement when pressed down on the car, unless the springs are not the prodrive ones, what other springs are people using???

Spruxxx 22 August 2009 08:35 PM

Can only comment on a newage but the great thing about Prodrive springs is that they noticably sharpen up the handling while keeping the standard ride (maybe better than standard because there's less roll). Teins are gonna be harder. My springs are blue front and rear and lower the car 25mm.

So if you're convinced it's only the springs at fault, either there's something wrong with them or they're not fitted properly. Could they have seized up or something?

millwrx 23 August 2009 01:39 AM

no joking,it crashes out over every bump, its like the springs are coil bound

TOMMY_TURBO 23 August 2009 01:46 AM

i have bilstein ppp shocks and eibach springs and they are fine but my shocks are silver not yellow:wonder:

maff125 23 August 2009 09:21 AM

I think I'm just gonna try some different springs, there's no movement at all when you push down on the car, might just be able to 'use' the car then!

duds64 23 August 2009 12:05 PM

is it possible you have the wrong lenth of springs on your car, i.e if they are too long and have been compressed to fit your shocks there for no gap between the coils.

maff125 23 August 2009 01:37 PM

could be, i think ill pop over to powerstation and see what they think, theres definatly not much room between the coils anyhow
