oil usage on 2.5's?

Hi All you 2.5 STI drivers.
Just a quick question, do you guys use some oil a lot to top up?
I do about 1000 mile a month and seem to have to top up the engine oil every month. It goes from the full mark to the low mark once a month.
Now the car doesnt smoke at all or oil in water etc, anyone else have this?

the_big_1 21 August 2009 09:32 PM

Any ideas?

Boyakasha 21 August 2009 09:40 PM

when is it at the full mark?

I'm guessing you are filling up the oil when it's cool to the full mark. This is why your car is smoking and you are burning so much oil a month.

You should test the oil level of the car either 5-10 mins after driving it should be at the full mark or when it is cold it should be just above the low mark.

The car doesnt smoke. I check it after I get home, 20 mins after and one week its at the full, month after its at the empty mark

This is why I asked about the car smoking, but I guess you are making a statement about the car not smoking.

It depends on how you read it :)

PS I don't use that much in my 2.5

Probably only need to top it up every 2-3 months

the_big_1 21 August 2009 09:52 PM

Any ideas where the oil is going lol

finchyboy 21 August 2009 10:02 PM

That is not a lot of oil for a turbocharged car to use in a 1000 miles

the_big_1 21 August 2009 10:11 PM

lol thats what I want to find out, is it normal etc?

rob84 21 August 2009 10:20 PM

subaru state 1ltr per 1000 miles, or thats what the card said when i picked up my hatch last year but i find mine only uses half a litre every 3000 miles

DannyBoy007 21 August 2009 10:24 PM

My old 2.0 classic didn't seem to use much at all, never had to add any between oil cahnges.

I thought the 2.5's were known for using oil, I'm sure someone will be along to confirm this shortly

the_big_1 21 August 2009 10:28 PM

1L about a 1000mile is what I am using so if other people say 2.5 use this, then it sounds ok.

Boyakasha 21 August 2009 10:32 PM

My car went a year and only used a 1L top up bottle.

1 litre per 1k miles is a lot.

the_big_1 21 August 2009 10:34 PM

No idea where its going then as it doesnt smoke, plugs out today where clean so not burnning it. Water is clear so o goin in header tank etc.

rob84 21 August 2009 10:34 PM

i will find the card that subaru sent and post it up

the_big_1 21 August 2009 10:38 PM

Might be worth getting a catch can (hyperflow), at least that way you can see if it's the breather pipes.

rob84 21 August 2009 10:42 PM

Sorry the card that came with the car just states periodic inspection I thought it was something different. you will find the breather hoses will collect oil and fire it back in through the turbo and intercooler, so a catch can would collect it but wouldnt put it back in the sump

It might at least tell you where some of it was going, but I'm not sure just one catcher is enough on boxers, as you've got a rocker-cover breather either side of the block and the crankcase breather, which would mean three input pipes at two different pressures.

the_big_1 21 August 2009 10:49 PM

There is a one way valve on the breather pipes, I wounder if its sticking and letting a bit of oil through?

Just gone past the 20k mark in the FSTi,done 3trips to The Ring, over 50laps and mine's used about half a litre in total, since March last year when I bought it.
My '05 Wrx did the same and used about the same amount of oil, what make/type of oil you using..fully/semi synthetic?
I've only ever used Shell Helix Ultra Fully Synthetic in mine.

Pete

MY07 RB320 2.5 ltr hasn't used a drop, but gets changed every 6 months / 5k miles.

20k miles now & also use Shell Helix Ultra fully synthetic!
