overheating. coollant loss
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone can help me. i have filled the header tank and over-flow tank many times and she keeps over heating. All i have driven the car is 2 miles and she over heats. There is no water in the fuel and no steam from the exhaust. it seems to be boiling over in the coollant over-flow tank. The coollant over-flow bottle fills with coollant and doesn't go down. When the engine is hot or cold. just stays. cheers Andrew (patmo498) |

Thank - you for your reply.
I have check the header tank no oil is evident. no goo in the oil. i have changed the header tank cap. and it seem to calm the heat problem. thanks Andrew (patmo498) ps is that normal. |

TBH you might be better off taking it to a local garage if only for them to carry out a pressure test and check your coolant system, if you do have pressurisation in the coolant system you are better safe than sorry. ;) |
thank-you for your help i will get it checked out.
the coolant pressure seems stable i will leave her run for 30 mins just to see. thank-you once again. andrew(patmo498) |
Feel the top and bottom of the Rad when the car is warm, could be the rad is partially blocked.
|
it could be:
water pump = see if the water is moving inside the water bottle thermostat = stays shut - take it off put it in boiling water and see if it opens head gasket = oil in water, custard crap top on oil cap or on dipstick, or a carbon dioxide tester blocked radiator = take top and bottem hoses off poor water through top and see if it comes out of bottem same speed as you put it in the top if so dont us radweld! -new rad hope thats helps or just take it to a garage lol |
thanks all for your help. hopefully we have sorted it. looks like it needs a new cap for the header tank. it has a new Rad. trial and error lol. we tried everthing else.
thanks all andrew (patmo498) |
if it has had a new rad its possible you have an airlock in the system somewhere,
|
i agree with newport white scooby and you could have an air lock in the system as scoobys are a mission for it and the best way to get rid of it is to fill the system through one of the pipes like the turbo water pipe :D it's a bit of a mission but seems to work fine as you can only fill it slow and traps less air and also once filled leave to stand for a little while and also squeeze pipes :thumb: hope this helps ;)
|
i agree with newport white scooby and sounds like air lock and best way to fill a scooby with coolant is to fill through one of the pipes like the turbo coolant pipe as you cant trap so much air as you have to fill it slower also once filled start engine and leave run then squeeze pipes and leave heaters on full warm then leave to stand with cap off for an hour top up and job done :thumb:
|
i had the same happen to me, spent money on everything, trying to tell myself it wasnt the headgasket, but it was
|
try refilling the coolant the way i said first as it dose work :thumb: you have nothing to lose and im sure if it was the headgasket you would either get oil/ film in the water or the other way around more common water in the oil :thumb:
|
I got the same problem about three months ago after a long run my temp gauge went up to the top and i was loosing coolant from my overflow i managed to get home left it cool down then filled it up the next day after that i kept checking my heder tank every other day but was ok on friday just gone the same thing happend again but this time it was over a short distance of about 10 miles lost all my water and it was bubbling and coming out from my overflow and the cap had blown open oil cap and dip stick are clean and no oil in water.
Thanks mogs62 |
headgasket as i said, i had no oil in my water, no smoke out the exhaust etc
|
Are your rad pipes getting very hard - i.e. pressure in the system ?? that will be a sign of the head gasket too. I had a similar prob to you with my Classic WRX JDM '95 - I could not figure out where my water losses were - no crud/mayo, oil in the water e.t.c - turned out to be a tiny crack in my rad end tank top left side - which under pressure was letting water out. New end tanks and a flush solved it.
|
A quick sniffer / block test would tell you if it's the headgasket and save you from paying out on the wrong parts.

Exactly the same on mine, and although the other causes were investigated, had to have both head gaskets replaced, they had defo failed.

I think really if your car is boiling over in the expansion tank, its most likely the headgasket and if it isnt now I'm sure it wont be long before the headgasket does start to leak.
The same happened to my car, I tried to tell myself it wasnt the headgasket. But my car had got hot, so I thought it was time for a big refresh. So I've got new rad with twin fans, new intercooler, thermostat, rad cap, headgaskets changed, cambelt and a full service. :) |
thank-you for all your help.
i have sent the car back to the bloke i got it from. he is trying to sort the problem. i dont think he has a clue what has gone wrong. lol the nugget. i have told him what you all have said. and now the garage said it could be the water pump. i dont think so. i have check various websites and i to think its the head gasket. i may get it back in the next week. once again thank-you for all your input patmo498 (andrew) |
Any surgestions my in car heater is only blowing cold air when it is set on hot and my radiator top pipe is hot and bottom is cold could this be my <Thermostat,Air lock,or my Radiator>any one had the same symptoms and i need to know where to find the thermostat and how to remove air lock this is a 96 import model version 4.
Thanks mogs62. |
Andrew, another possibility is a blocked rad and leaking heater matrix. I recently had a car that has a leaky matrix but some **** had put a few packs of Bars Stopleak into the cooling system patially blocking the rad. If there are cool spots on the rad and possibly a 'currylike' smell in the car then this could be the case.

Thanks mogs62. you need to remove the cover that the bottom rad hose connects to on the engine(2x10mm bolts) the thermostat is located in there. put it in the kettle if its faulty it wont open when it boils ;) remember to get it sorted asap or headgasket will go as the hot water on engine cant escape |
morning all
This may sound like a silly question. is their a thermostat in the water pump. The garage said it may be the thermostat in the pump. this car is doing my head in. Can anyone help me please. or should i just burn it out lmao. :) |
Are the cooling fans working properly?
If not this may indicate 1. The fans/electrical connections/circuits are fooked. 2 The thermostat is shagged. Is the coolant pump working? The impeller could be fooked. |
cheers Blue.
