Problems getting my nan in my car.

Tomorrow i am bringing my nan to my house but i have a problem. She is 90 and cant walk very well and mostly uses a wheelchair now. The problem is my seats in the car are very low. Is it safe to use cushions to prop her up?

Any suggestions? :thumb:

She hasn't been to my house since i lost my mum 3 years ago, and in that time she has shrunk :p

I am unable to borrow another car and there is no one to bring her to me :wonder:

I know the feeling, thats why my scooby went, and the Picasso came along.

Its the drop into car seats that is the hard part. The transition where you lose control for a moment. All you can do really is give as much support as possible. Cushions are an option, and should be safe, but not gonna make much difference.

Stick the fossil on the roof.

Pmsl, my daughter has just suggested her car booster seat :D

Even i struggle to get out of the car sometimes. If i park on a hill facing up it i have real problems getting out. I have to pull myself out using the whatever i can hold:wonder:

I am going to sell mine next year probably :thumb:

ALi-B 19 August 2009 08:57 AM

My gran copes, admittedly she is younger though.

Gran in a NSX did confuse some folk when I dropped her off in the high street :D

Little observation/moan, and its not old people, but people in general of all ages (but especially overweight), when they go to sit down, they lower themselves to the target seat slowly, then about 1ft away relax all the muscles in their legs causing them to crash down. Why do people do this? Highly annoying when I'm sat on a bench seat. How hard is it to lower ones arse and relax after said arse has made contact with said seat.

You obviously have more control of your arse than others :D

My son sits down like that on the leather suit at home. Its foofing annoying. Its like an elephant taking a seat

speedy steve 19 August 2009 09:17 AM

never had any probs with my gran, similar age & not massively mobile but the back seats a lot easier to get in & out of than the front ( in a wagon anyway )

sarasquares 19 August 2009 09:25 AM

I am going to see if i can find a bigger car booster seat than my daughters. My nan may have got shorter over the years but she has also got wider :p

Steve vRS 19 August 2009 09:26 AM

My father in law, who had a stroke recently, finds it easier to get into the back of my Octavia. The seats are a little higher than the front but as importantly are flat without any bolsters or sculpting. He can't get into the front seats as he can't slide his legs around the bolsters.

Stick her in a Taxi and dont worry

David Lock 19 August 2009 09:34 AM

Best not to let her drive until she is used to the car :D

Get her standing outside the passenger door with bum facing seat. Plenty of cushions and then support her as she lowers her bum onto seat. Then swing her legs in and belt her in. Seat back to be as straight as possible.

Does she live close by? My village have a Transit type thing which goes around collecting old folk to take them shopping or whatever with a driver who knows about things like this. All free. Any chance of anything similar in your patch?

My GP Surgery also offers a patient transport service for hospital appontments.

I did suggest some sort of special transport but she is too old to be dealing with strangers, you know what crispies are like :D

I am going to try and use my daughters booster seat with a pillow over the top to soften it a bit, failing that she is going in the boot :p

Why don't you go and visit her instead. Job done!

Mods - lock the thread now please ;) :D

I do visit her but she only gets to sit in one room. Here, i will plant her in the garden so she can watch my runner beans grow :D

Its a day out for the old dear :thumb:

Which curry house do you go to?! Must be a bloody big nan if you cant get it in your car!

J4CKO 19 August 2009 12:28 PM

Tell her to feign an illness, get the ambulance to come, tell her to say she feels ok at hospital and get her delivered back to yours !

Alternatively, nick some bottles of Gin from the offy, dob her in, Police take her away in nice sensible car and get them to drop her home to yours !

sarasquares 19 August 2009 12:42 PM

Panic over, i have found some bungy clips :D

my06 ppp silver 19 August 2009 07:00 PM

try this!!! The Beverly Hillbillies

bioforger 19 August 2009 07:27 PM

Listen, do the old bird a favour. Like the trusty old family labrador that's on it's last legs, it's only fair to take her out back and blow her away with your favourite shotgun :thumb:

Gave my mate a lift home from hospital a couple of years back, complete with broken back, etc... Oh how he didn't enjoy that. :lol1:

j4ckos mate 19 August 2009 10:44 PM

dpb 19 August 2009 10:45 PM

Good memory :lol1:

I have decided to use my daughters booster seat with a pillow over it so she doesn't feel the edges, should work lol :p

ScoobyWon't 20 August 2009 01:27 AM

I take my nan everywhere in my car without too many problems.

Although, should I hit a speedbump at speed, the lid pops off the urn and things can get a bit dusty.

I'm sure there's a way around this... :wonder:

use the car's ashtray -- designed just for this purpose

Leslie 20 August 2009 11:05 AM

No reason why you can't use the cushions though.

finalzero 20 August 2009 01:59 PM

put a bike rack on the back, stick her on that, alternatively tie her up on a roof rack... or with a bit of rope about 10 feet from the car if you want to give her something to do

sarasquares 21 August 2009 09:25 AM

Today i am paying the price of getting my nan in and out of my car :(

My back, its foofed today. I couldn't use a booster seat as it made getting into the car impossible. I used some folded blankets to raise her up. Twisting her round was hard, if i had a 'lazy Susan' i could have sat her on it and swivveled her into position :D But we did have a great time. Luckily her wheelchair was able to go all around my house and through to the garden. I only squashed her fingers once as she catapulted sideways into the back door lol. She had the good grace to say it was exciting :D

I am now on the lookout for a wheelchair with air filled wheels. Hers has solid wheels which made the whole experience much harder.
Anyway, we spent the entire day in the garden, she didn't want to come back in. She looked like i had dragged her backwards through a hedge as it was so windy all day, and all the paint has been scraped off the wheelchair :p

I was dreading a 'bottom' accident but we were spared :luxhello:
