exhaust law changing

just been speaking to a company who makes custom exhaust , and he mentioned that he had heard from his suppliers that from november the law will be

if caught without a cat on your system its up to £5000 fine and they could crush your car

anybody else heard this

cheers phil

I've not heard this, bloody hope it's not true though! :freak3:

G-Man1982 17 August 2009 02:27 PM

i have also heard the same.

Erm IIRC this is the law now... no cat means your car is not roadworty, in fact its the same as not having an MOT (although the chances of being caught are rare)

I thought the law was passing an emission test, not actually physically having a cat on the car?

That is correct Boro, there is no current law nor MOT requirement to have a catalytic converter fitted. The only current requirement is that the car passes the emissions test

(In some rare cases, decatted cars can be coaxed through the stricter emissions tests - just. Scoobies don't have a chance in hell though, unless its a pre MY95 import).

As for law changes, never heard of any. Still doesn't stop you cutting open teh catalytic coverter, removing the element and welding it back up (As I did on my escort when it shattered). Or, the less sophsticated way of ramming a rod up the down pipe and smashing the element and shaking it until all the contents are removed (don't do this, it can block your exhaust and silencers from any remanent fragments left behind).

Although having said that, I've encountered cars that have ejected the catalyst of its own accord after being driven for a prolong periods with incorrect fuel mixtures/misfires (usually old Range Rovers and old Jags). Self decat :D
