towing?

Hi guys a bit of advise please!!... ive got a uk turbo wagon and was ringing around today to get a towbar fitted for towing the caravan, but the towbar fitting guy said scoobies are terrible for towing caravans!!

I would of thought they would be the perfect car for towing!!

Any one got any towing experience??

Thanks

Dave

IIRC, a Scooby was "Towcar of the Year" back in the day.

there seems to be a bit of confusion some people say they are NOT suitable for towing and others just say just the saloon is unsuitable ..

is it just the fact that the clutch will burn out quicker? Or is it general wear and tear to the car?

There must be others out there that tow (caravans)

Mine is 99 (T) UK Wagon by the way

Anyone ...please....:thumb:

think you will find believe it or not there not type approved for towing therefore no towing weight listed have a look google a website called "kerb weights" and find your model,

top and bottom ov it is if you get stopped by vosa you wont be going anywhere and the will issue a prohib notice it wont make you smile am 100%

Tow car of the year was an outback H6, some years ago - it's not bad, my wife uses it - has just about enough power to pull the lump.

Most cars can tow, the safe limit for a braked trailer is 80-85% of the car's weight, I believe.

So, a classic wagon, at roughly 1290 kilos should be able to tow a braked trailer of around 1090kg - or the weight of a smallish loaded 2 berth, or unladen 4.

I'd be concerned about gearing, as the classics are a bit long, for low speed work - hence the worry about the clutch. If you are going up lots of slow/steep hills, then perhaps it's not the most suitable car. Perhaps the shorter jap spec 6 speed box would be better - but there's no way mine is going near a tow ball.

Good luck, don't forget the silly wing mirrors, the anti-snaking device and weight distribution of the lump on the back.

I towed a small caravan with my 2003 STI, and I remember then that some said they were no good as a towcar, but I never had an issue... Just don't thrash it

I then swapped it for a Spec B Legacy (3.0L H6) and that was a beautiful engine, just thirsty
