how many miles is an engine good for ?

just wondering what sort of millage the 2000 turbo is good for ?
i know it will be hard to guess but what millage are your classics on and have they had a rebuild or original engine ?

moff1888 04 August 2009 06:19 PM

MY99 Original engine 105,000 miles. Still running as good as ever.

amego 04 August 2009 06:20 PM

G-Man1982 04 August 2009 06:23 PM

DannyBoy007 04 August 2009 06:27 PM

125K on my old My99 and still pulls well. did a track day last month and it was faultless all day

billsandhu 04 August 2009 06:42 PM

95k on my old 2ltr engine still going strong in a new car and been running over 300bhp for the last 50k.

Harryr34 04 August 2009 07:21 PM

39600 and still going strong :)

TonyBurns 04 August 2009 07:24 PM

Its as good as you treat it and maintain it, rag it from cold and it will suffer in the long term, dont service it and it will give you grief, there are the odd exceptions but thats mainly the rule :)

Tony:)

Big Pete 04 August 2009 07:53 PM

gazza1591 04 August 2009 09:52 PM

some highish mileage motors around then ?

what sort of money you looking at to rebuild an engine with 100k on the clock if you wanted to have one done ?

Although some of this was recorded in kms, the picture was taken 18 months ago, so my 93 WRX is probably fairly close to the 200,000 mile mark. :)
Original clutch was changed at 140,000 miles.

I know the car has been well looked after, because I've been driving it for the last 150,000 miles! Still reliable as ever (except the header tank, which has a slight weep at the moment and a replacement is imminent). Went on holiday to Switzerland and back in it in June, no worries :D

A bit rattly when cold, but it's always been like that. Regular-ish oil changes, always warmed up and cooled down and I try not to do short journeys of only a few mins. Has ported headers, a full decat, ScoobyECU and still gets driven like it should when conditions allow :)

98,000 and sweet.... there is a high milage subaru site somewhere on the net with cars (some Impreza) that have hit over 250,000 miles on the same engine..... if you look after the car and don't rag it all the time and it is left as is from Subaru they can last as long as a BMW or other high end motor.....

myblackwrx 05 August 2009 08:41 AM

Subaru High Mileage Club

gazza1591 05 August 2009 09:55 AM

wow some high mileage cars on that site

the reasons i asked the question was i was looking to get a car with around 100k on it and have a rebuild depending on price ? not sure if would be cheaper to get a lower mileage car to start with ?

ScoobyNudge 05 August 2009 10:21 AM

My 1999 turbo 2000 is on 103k and apart from piston slap from cold which goes when warm she drives lovelly.:thumb:

Original engine too!

There's no point rebuilding an engine if it doesn't need it.
There are plenty of scoobs with high mileages that haven't had a rebuild.

Doing an engine rebuild for the sake of it doesn't really make sense IMO - where are you going to stop? Change the clutch, suspension, gearbox, driveshafts, diffs.....?

ian.b 05 August 2009 02:42 PM

Aprox 60.000mls my blob had nearly 105k when it needed a bottom end rebuild.
It also depends on how you drive them !!

yea i see where you are coming from but is better to wait for failure from any of the things you have listed ?

mr terzo 05 August 2009 04:04 PM

i have a 98 uk classic with 171,000 running a td05 at 1.45bar all on original engine and gearbox. i just look after it and dont thrash the nuts off it all the time

kin quick 05 August 2009 05:47 PM

Not as high as some, but my 7 year old Bug has 86K and I've had it from new. Done 4 track days, 6 x 1/4mile drag runs and gets driven fairly easy most of the time, but when I get to use it properly, I do give it some :D
Only running a de-cat, EkuTEK, ported headers and few other little bits, but been like this since the warrenty ran out.
TD05 going on it soon.
Plenty of oil changes and warming up/down properly is the best way to keep them running sweet!

chocolate_o_brian 05 August 2009 05:56 PM

Timwinner on here has a 135k Hawkeye STi :D FECK.

niktiler 05 August 2009 06:29 PM

how much did that set you back and what was included ?

EddScott 05 August 2009 07:15 PM

I find it extraordinary that we expect manufacturer built engines to easily sail past 100K without a cough or splutter yet tuning companies expect us to take it on the chin if the engine they built can't get past 1K without lunching itself.

Doesn't make a bit of sense to me.

M0j0 06 August 2009 05:46 AM

70k miles & 2 rebuilds ;) .. depends on the car and its past :)

Smurf786 06 August 2009 06:05 AM

My98 Classic Terzo is on 130,000 Just brought it. Has a lil oil leak from rocker gasket but thats it apart from that it runs sweet. If your going to buy one with high mileage be sure it has service history as you will know its been looked after. I mean look at DaveD A very good example. Sometimes its better to buy a car with high mileage as you know most of them miles will be motorway miles. Better than having one that's been used for short journeys. :thumb:
