Just noticed one hell of a clattering coming from the area around the Turbo when the car is idling (it sounds like a loose chain kind of clatter) if you know what I mean???

It doesn't seem to do it all the time either - which makes a visit to a Subaru dealer guarateed to cure it by the time I drive on the forecourt!! then to re-appear when I drive away!! - you've all been there.

Anyone any ideas?? idling seems smooth, car seems to be running ok, I seem to remember reading about the Wastegate or something can make a noise??? - I don't want to guide you in any direction but what do you all think???

It's a MY00, 11000miles, and under warranty so I should be ok with getting it sorted - but I would like to turn up at the dealers armed with some idea of what it is. Maybe its an easy cure you all know of that I could try?

Any takers?? the area of the clatter is around the Turbo area??

Probably be the heat shield rattling against the housing due to a bolt having sheared.

Heat shield is favourite, should take the dealership about 20 mins once the turbo has cooled off.

Brilliant quick responses thanks - is it an easy job, or should I leave it to the Scooby garage??? the sound of a loose heat shield seems to be the kind of noise that would make. What do I do?? where do I look?? is it easy to get to and sort??

My mind rests a little easier - phew - http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

IMHO
Let the garage do it, it's part of ya warranty after all.

Paul

pslewis 13 February 2001 02:23 PM

Agreed - but if its just a loose bolt????

It would take me 5 mins to tighten?? maybe??

Thanks for your info Paul anyway - is it a bugger to get to?? should I wiggle it when its all cooled?? will I see what the heat shield is?? what is it shielding?? Turbo from what??

Loose heatshield needs welding. Its so quick and cheap that you may as well let the dealer sort it. Its quite common and harmless, just irritating.

(Pick up some decent wheels while you're there.... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif)

pslewis 13 February 2001 02:39 PM

Thanks Ben - yes I will look at the decent wheels - plenty of silver wheels in all the garages (cant say I have seen Golds on offer to Joe Public??) Is that cos Joe Public think them - how shall I say??? PANTS? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

It needs welding??? bloody hell thats not a job for a Subaru dealer then? ****! and its maybe not 20 minutes either?

Pete,
Tut, tut! My GREY IMPORT WRX has done 36000 miles and doesn't rattle one bit! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/tongue.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

pslewis 13 February 2001 09:04 PM

Being serious for a second!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

The SIDC web site says that this heat shield rattle is only common on pre-97 cars ... the ones without the engine bay tray underneath - so?? any other ideas at all?? or is the heat shield still favourite??

Also, I held a metal item against the Turbo heat shield and the rattling didnt stop - its obviously a shield lower down the engine somewhere??

Leigh - yours doesnt rattle of course as the Grey imports dont have the high spec of the UK cars (less to rattle my friend) http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif it also doesnt have a heat shield as they are only designed to last the 3 year life they have in Japan http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

If you really must have gold then a dealer near me has a set of gold MY99 wheels for sale. They are brand new with tyres and he's had 'em for a while so he'll be open to offers.

Leigh, I don't think that will help Pete and I don't like the colour Grey. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Sounds like the heatshield, its more common on pre97 cars as they were more exposed.

Does it increase when you rev slightly then dissapear above around 2000rpm? Only when hot or all the time?

Lee

pslewis 13 February 2001 09:48 PM

Lee only noticed it when hot

And the sound does disappear at higher revs (or does it just get too noisy I cant hear it?) http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

It really sounds bad - like a timing chain on an old Jaguar (if anyone is as old as me to remember?) http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Pete

logiclee 13 February 2001 09:53 PM

Same as mine did then.

Heatshield was loose and touching downpipe on mine. Did it while I waited at main dealer, don't think they did any welding.

I still get a cooling down type ticking/rattling from the downpipe area after a hardish run even when the engine is ticking over. They all do that sir has been the response on this one.

Lee

pslewis 13 February 2001 09:56 PM

Well yes the ticking and tinkling is fine - makes me feel like Colin McRea http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Will get a dealer to have a look see - I will probably get under it knowing me ... its probably just a loose bolt.

Anyone know how to get the lower tray off http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Pete

pslewis 16 February 2001 02:16 PM

Its still clattering http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

Now, I have parked up - looked for the clatter under the bonnet - engine running - after about 2 minutes the noise gradually disappears and I cant make it re-appear

Do you all reckon Heat Shield is still favourite?

Don't want to worry you Pete, and its probably not the following, but I thought I should mention it.

When I had my 7500mile service a few weeks ago I was told that there is a problem with the cambelt failing. (only on MY00) And you know what that means. Might be an idea to check it, as you know how noises under a bonnet can move around.

My dealer said it won't immediately fail but you will hear it, loud and clear!!

I guess it must be breaking down or something and pieces of the belt smacking against the covers??

Well I feel a whole lot better now http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif - should I just get the razor blades and end it all?????

Yes, ok, I can hear everyone saying 'yes, go on, kill yourself'!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Its going in in 10days time to get sorted - the service department said that the heat shield is the culprit - what they do is put a totally new one on, so they say.

NO mention of a cambelt failure problem on MY00's where did you get that story from - I'd like to check it out - cheers
