revs keeps playing around
 

Just need some advise guys took the car out for a drive nothing hard, the cars revs started to play around up and down from 1000rpm to 500rpm to 0rpm and then shoots back up. It just turned off on me once bit hestitant to use the car. The yellow engine management light came on then after an hour drive it went off.
Getting worried now anybody know whats happening, going to take it to the local garage which is a subaru dealer to put on the computer. Service not due for another 4000 miles.
At the moment the cars playing aroung up and down with the revs on stand still and when driving just feels different, hard to explain.
The car is a JDM blob eye sti 04 (im sure i saw a link about some thing like this a while ago but cant find it.

My mate had this on his sti. His would rev by itself when idling. He cleaned his MAF and this has sorted it.

had that problem on mine. you need to clean the idle air control valve:)

THANK GUYS:notworthy used to get this in my old megane was the ICV, but could this cause a problem when driving the car as this is a daily run about car??? So you saying MAF and ICV need to be cleaned, not a mechanical person so I have two opinons Take it to my subaru dealer close 5 mins away or go to subaru specialist about 45 minutes drive. But have to use the car will my daily drive do anything to the car, need to book appointment as soon a possible. Can I use the car for a daily drive or will this cause problems to the car, no hard driving I promise:nono:.:thumb:

had this other day as i havent ran the car for about 2 weeks, warmed car up then took it on a gentle drive for 10 minutes, then blatted it down a dual carrigeway and all was sorted, i put it down to a sticking valve let air into system which caused high idle.

There is a guide on here to do the icv dealer will want you to have a complete new valve not cheap

Might try that out phil and see if it works, otherwise to the mechanic to see whats happening with the ICV or MAF. Its not idling too high max is 1000rpm but not normal and also idling low to the point of 100rpm, when on stand still. Hope its not anything to be worried about??????:brickwall:wonder:

If the idle control valve and the throttle control valve the same (i think it is) try cleaning the electrical connections on it . Thats the first (an usually the last) thing the dealer will do, dont know wot it looks like onna scoob but its usually near the inlet manifold, (I can tell you were it is on an Escort) once youve found it it'll take 5 seconds to clean the connectors clean it with a proper contact cleaner NOT WD40.
Or its the O2 sensor on your CAT thats f***ed.

I've got the exact same problem on my 2005 Scooby WRX and have had it for 3 weeks now where it is getting to the point where I don't enjoy driving the car anymore.:rolleyes:

I've cleaned the MAF as this is very simple to do (just unscrew the two screws and it pops out) but to no avail.:wonder:

Next step is to have the ICV cleaned which a Scooby specialist is going to do this Saturday which should sort the problem out. If you go down this route, you will need to make sure you purchase a ICV gasket beforehand as this will need to be replaced when you reconnect the ICV to the car. You can get this from Roger Clark Motorsport (ordered mine 6.00pm and delivery was next morning) which costs around £9 all in.

Here is a link how to clean the ICV but I am not that mechanically minded so will be taking it to an independent Scooby specialist. Subaru UK wanted to replace the whole ICV unit which will cost a lot more.

jees mate i can sympathise with ya ive just had the same issue with my 94 sti i ended up changing the idle control valve, the 02 sensor and coilpacks and then found out the m.a.f was faulty too my advise is to take it to a specialist if i'd have done that in the 1st place it would have saved me money and grief and you do get to the stage of being really wazzed off with them and not wanting to go out for a drive but persivere ....good luck hope you get it sorted asap

cleaning the MAF sensor did nothing, so i took it for a computer diagnostic and the mechanic told me it was the MAF sensor. So I went to the dealer and he tried a new MAF sensor which cured the problem:norty:. He gave me the opinion to leave the old MAF or have a new MAF, so I took the new MAF (bloody pricey):freak3:. But at least the car drives normal, driving the car while the revs used to fluctuate, did not enjoy the driving experience:nono:.

Advised by the dealer that the car has a aftermarket exhaust (ninja 2 exhaust and a aftermarket airfilter), the dealer said that this could of been the problem and recommended me to replace them to the standard stock, something about the ecu not recognising how much air flow is needed.:wonder::wonder::wonder:

Cost me about 350 for diagnostic and MAF sensor from dealer:cry:, if anyone is willing to contribute please let me know!!!:lol::lol:

Was advised by a subaru specialist to get the car tuned, because of the aftermarket parts, so the car recognises the aftermarket parts so no problem in the future, which is another 350, so do you think this is needed guys. If so definately need contribution will put account number up.
