If you are bulking and looking to add muscle you will need around 1.5g of protein per lb lbm.

Ignore the overpriced crap myprotein do 4.5 kgs for £24.99 (or they did)

I found just eating properly with the odd extra dose of protein (home made raw egg whites, milk, sugar) did the trick along as you work out like a nutter.

Me and mates got all the powders - very little results. Then I stepped up my routine, my appetite went mental, I ate fairly sensibly (in huge quantities) and put on three stone in 18 months.

I think too many get too fixated on diet and forget the working out bit.

I've just cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats and thought I would use the high muscle protein powder from Boots. It definitely made a difference, tops of the thighs grew noticeably within a week, and the day after I ran out of it, the cycling seemed a fair bit harder, I didnt have the effortless reserves of energy to do the steep hills like I did before.

Thanks - to be fair though, it depends on two things, how long you take to do it and the amount of training you do for it. We did it in 14 days which is about 75 miles per day, so within the reach of most people if they prepare. (Met some people setting off from JoG who were doing it in 9). I did about 2 months of training beforehand and found it prepared me well for it. The actual ride went better than I thought it would, so I guess the preparation work paid off.

Good weather too, only one day of rain!

And to answer the OP questions, I mixed with milk, it tastes much better and you get extra protein, with water it tastes crap. The exercise is supposed to tone the body, no pain, no gain dude! ;)

Also what times are best to take the protein shakes before a workout or after workout and how many times a day etc?

GlesgaKiss 18 July 2009 12:11 AM

If I recall correctly it's around 60-90 minutes after a workout. The body is crying out for nutrition at this point, especially if you've been lifting heavy weights!

New_scooby_04 18 July 2009 08:39 AM

First thing to note is that there are no magic formulas. So forget anything that claims to be able to turn someone from a bloater to Arnie in 4 weeks! :)

If muscle gain is your goal, you have to get the basics right first - what body builders refer to as the triangle: Nutrition, Exercise and Rest. Things like protein supplements are exactly that, supplements, not substitutes for a good diet. I think dietitians would suggest about 2g of protein per KG of body weight for muscle gain, but it is critical that your workout regime is correct and you allow your body to recover between workouts.

Of the products I've tried, these ones have been by far the best. Credit to Telboy for the recommendation.

Multipower

Good luck!

Can you be sure that all these patent additives etc. are not bad for you in the long run?
