Just ringing around garages for best price, only one garage out of the 3 said that the cambelt change ISN'T needed on my car until 60k, so prices were as follows:

KT Green £470.00
RN Golden £391
F R Pulleyn £159.60

What did they change on the 2000 model so that the cambelt change isn't needed?

cheers,

greg

IIRC Cambelt is 45k across the range.

I'd still get it done regardless of what that one say.

Dizzy 07 March 2002 04:40 PM

try Len @ subaru 4 you....

www.subaru4you.co.uk best for miles :)

gregh 07 March 2002 04:46 PM

subaru4you a touch far away!

Why replace something at 45k when Subaru say wait until 60k???

cheers,

greg

I was under the impression that cambelt was 45k miles on all of them... I think you would be taking a big chance running it to 60k.... I have had a cambelt go (not on a Subaru) 1000miles before the mileage it was due...

I have paid around £450 for the 45,000mile service including the cambelt change... so the prices you were quoted where good.
Had that service twice... on two different Impreza's... both MY96's mind...

JGM :)

bioforger 07 March 2002 04:59 PM

yeh, whoever told u too wait til 60K sbe shutdown :( it must be done @ 45K or 3yrs old, whichever comes 1st.

Matt Churchill 07 March 2002 05:11 PM

Had my 45k done not all that long ago, and was told by my dealer that the cam belt was at 60k on later cars, of which mine was one. I double checked and he was quite adamant. Mine is July 99!

Richard Askew 07 March 2002 05:13 PM

45K!!!!

Jolly Green Monster 2 07 March 2002 05:14 PM

That is good... :)

60k is a long time for a cambelt to last though...

Ian E 07 March 2002 05:15 PM

Definitely 60K - this was discussed in a previous thread a while back.

Goldfinger 07 March 2002 05:17 PM

I must admit I was of the impression the cam belt needed changing @ 45k - I'll be having this service done shortly

Cheers

In the service booklet for a MY00 it does indeed say that the cambelts must be changed at 48 months/60,000 miles.

kevin stanton 07 March 2002 05:22 PM

45k on a MY99, had mine done 3 days ago.
is the MY00 the bug eye model ?

thats why it could be 60k

Kevin
MY99 with a new cambelt !

gregh 07 March 2002 05:23 PM

MY00 is NOT bugeye

greg

carl 07 March 2002 06:04 PM

MY00 is 60k. Had it done a few weeks ago. It's an expensive service, as it's all the fluids too. 720 quid from my local dealer -- got it done at TN in the end.

Floyd 07 March 2002 09:29 PM

You could go for the cheapest maindealer quote. He'll put a stamp in the service book and you'll have a years warranty left if it goes pop. As long as the book is stamped they won't have a leg to stand on, as you shouldn't have to tell 'em what to do.

What a complete bl00dy stroke of luck!! My MY00 has literally just turned 45k (45,024), and I was dreading the phonecall to book her in for the service at KT Greens. Thanks for the update. Me thinks a call to Pulleyn's in York is required!

I love this place :D

Mind you, I think I will check to be ont the safe side!

A much happier Jim :D

I have an Impreza Manual Issued Jan 1997 B which gives camshaft drive belt to be replaced at 60k / 48 months section 10-3

My Chiltons Subaru manual '85-'96 says under heading 'timing belt'

"The cogged timing belt at the front of all Subaru engines is a combination of woven fabric and rubber. Although this type of belt offers many advantages over the traditional timing chain, including extended service intervals and a smoother more quiet running engines, this type of belt should be inspected on a regular basis, and changed according to manufacturer change interval.
The recommended timing belt change for all engines covered by this manual is 60,000 miles."

So... Make of that what you will :D

I had my cambelt replaced at 10,000 miles - better to be safe than sorry I say!! ;)

I had mine replaced under warranty as it was rubbing against the cover/adjuster side wall .......... or something!!??

Mine is a MY00 and its 60k - simple as that.

LEE P 07 March 2002 10:39 PM

Yep my handbook says 60000k for MY00 non Bugeye i might add!

60000k isnt that long when a quattro 20v is due at 80000. :D

MikesWagon 07 March 2002 11:02 PM

Is this the same Subaru thinking that gave us increased service intervals from MY01 to MY02?

I've got a MY99, and have just had the belt replaced at 36 months, mileage only 26k. 36 months/45k is what the book says.

Did anything change apart from the ECU for MY00?

Mike.

pslewis 07 March 2002 11:08 PM

I would hazard a guess that the belt is of a better spec. and/or maybe its run is less stressful??

Pete

JamieMacdonald 08 March 2002 01:52 AM

Yeah, I am a bit confused about this. I just had my cambelt replaced on my MY97 (45k miles) as stated in the service schedule book(and advised as by dealer ;) ).
Although the chart that shows when stuff should be inspected/replaced (also in the service schedule book)states that it should be @ 60k miles!
Had it done anyway to be on the safe side :)
But on the downside found out the cambelt tensioner needed replacing :(

Mac's Power 08 March 2002 02:05 AM

Just to add fuel to the fire. I checked my MY00 wagon service book and it's recommended at 45,000 miles. I wonder is my book from an older model? Just had my belt changed at 43,000 miles to be on the safe side.

I had a MY98 in recently for repair and it was running very badly and the cambelt had slipped 2 teeth. The car had done 50,000 miles with no timing belt change !! Amazingly when new timing belt fitted and a few prayers the car was fine......no bent valves or anything....Phew

Paul.

LEE P 08 March 2002 02:46 AM

Lucky you!!!

i think although it says 60000 in my service book i might just have it done on my next service...45000 to be safe! :D

Hi,
Don't doubt that later models M00+ have increased mileage schedules but I just had a 90K service done on my MY98 turbo at main dealer which includes camshaft drive belt replacement as stated in my service and warranties booklet, both in the schedule of inspection list which gives a comprehensive list of items to adjust, inspect, recommends service and replace and also in the box that gets the dealer stamp it is printed "Includes cam belt" this is at 45k and 90k.
The 90k is a real stinger as it incorporates the 30k full lube service as well!! Must add that I was well impressed with the bill for £635 all in as I had been expecting £700+
Thumbs up to the guys at Beechdale Subaru in Nottingham:D:D

RichieB 08 March 2002 08:35 AM

Change all Turkish "pattern part" cambelts every 100 miles....that's what the trade recommends! :D

Ian E 03 July 2002 05:08 PM

The Cambelt interval for an MY00 IS 60k

[Edited by Ian E - 3/7/2002 5:09:00 PM]

gregh 03 July 2002 05:13 PM

Yup, just rung IM technical who confirmed it, 60k for cam belt change on 2000 model Imprezas onwards.

greg
