Driver advice needed (golf)
 

looking to replace my taylorMde 'bubble' Burner 10.5degree driver...... 10yrs old.

not sure what driver to swap too with out spendinga shed load.

tried a couple of Benross drivers out the pro shop, hit them ok, but nothing special.

anyone had a new driver and can recomend it?

Ive just bought a new set of clubs after a 7 years absence. I tried every driver possible but opted for the Mizuno MX 560....the replacement is MX700 (hardly any difference). 10.5 degrees is a bit lofted though??

Can't go wrong with Callaway clubs IMHO. Mine must be over 6 years old now, and I can keep up with my partners who have much new ( and bigger headed ) drivers, and can knock it over 300yrds easily. Whilst that probably isn't the latest model, you'll save loads on it, and not sacrifice much in terms of playability.

Make sure you get the right shaft flex for your swing though.

Thats the fella!!! I love it, my last driver was a warbird many years ago and it puts it to shame......bargain price from there as well.

Regular shaft for me, don't swing fast enough for a stiffy or slow enough for a whippy.

had a whippy shaft on a Vantage Widow 12 degree many years ago, that was like a rubber band lol

the guy i played with on tuesday had one, i had a go with it, its very light! think he had it in 11degree too

I'm still using my Big Bertha!!LOL!! :D
Also got a Dunlop 10.5 thingy - bought it on a whim really, just to see how it goes. Looks like a house brick on a stick!! :D
Only use Carbon Fiber shafts, as I haven't got a strong swing.

anyone who hasn't bought a new driver in the last few years is really missing out. they're so easy to hit now it's daft.

i remember using a bubble Burner years ago, probably the furthest i've ever hit a driver to be honest, a real monster:D but sacrificing 10-15 yards on the pure shots to still finding the fairway with bad hits has really brought my game on.

i have used a King Cobra L4V for about 2 years now and it's just about the easiest driver i've ever used. not the longest, but the forgiveness is unbeliveable. I tried the Ping G10 and G10 draw over the last 3 months and i sold them both to stick with the Cobra, an awesome piecs of kit (for me anyway, but i guess finding the club that's for you is the hardest bit;))

My choice of weapon is the Nike Sasquatch, big enough to kill a small elephant.

this afternoon, I've been to the local driving range and tried a couple of clubs.. one was this....

the other a £199 Cleverland... wasn't too happy with the loud sound taht made.

But did like the R7 CGB Max club, will have a second try with it in the week. I did like that and every one on the range went to the 200+yrd 'back net'. so couldn't see how far it would have gone. Bit did feel and sound ace.

These newer drivers are easier to hit.
Try out a 9 degree one as well.
It will probably give similar elevation to your old 10.5.

Get the FTi, you will love it, most of us rightys have a fade, I have a 10 degree draw and it straighten up my drive no end....
Just bought a set of Callaway Prototype Irons, now they are the Mutts Nuts.
Find a retailer with a range (the bigger Amg"s) and try the lot then get them on line.....

I see more and more people using higher lofted drivers at the club now, this isnt a bad thing as depending on your swing you might benefit from higher or lower lofts.

Depending on how much you are willing to spend, you would be better off going for a fitting day at an independent specialist.

Someone that can monitor launch angle and club head speed, as these will help you get the best set up for your game.

Try as many as you can - think of the shaft as the engine of your club. There are loads of different types of shaft regardless of the flex. Kick points change, torque and weight.

My favourite driver is the Titleist 983K, 8.5 degree, fijikura stiff shaft. Went like a rocket however not as forgiving as the Titliest 907 D2, proforce V2 shaft on 9.5 degree. I have lost considerable yardage however the balls in play more. All in all the reviews on this driver are poor, dont think Titleist even like it - the search continues :)

To go legal for competitions, I've swapped a 3 year old R540/stiff/9.5 deg to move to an R580 XD/med/9.5 deg this year.
Its adding about 30 yards (250 yards average) but am getting almost all drives on the fairway. Seems the medium shaft makes allowances for mistimings.
Cost was an Ebaytastic £45!

been to Ramsdale Park GC this evening and tried teh T/M GCB Max aagin, also tried teh PING G3 and took my 'old' T/M Burner.

the GCB Max is such a lovely club, every shot was 200yrds + (couldn't tell how much more as it kept hitting the fence/net at the end on the driving range)

The Ping didn't go quite as far and felt heavier then the GCB Max.

don't even ask how my Burner was!!!!.... slice, slice, hook, duff shots.... oooh then I hit a good one!!


Soooo... went for the Taylor Made GCB Max as trying any more clubs would confuse me.. and I couldn't ask for a better shot from a driver.

the sale price was £169.99 and they did it for £150 :) and it came with a head cover :)


so dead happy. can't wait to get it out on the course now :D

The CGB Max is a nice driver if you like the colour and shape (I do), it polarises opinion.

Plenty of loft is the new holy grail! Low spin and high launch is the aim.

If 10.5 is good enough for Tiger, it's good enough for anyone... :)

I've just bought a Nike Sasquatch off my mate for £40 and it's the best driver i've ever had. Goes feckin miles:D

He got rid of it after three weeks after paying £50 for it. Decided he didn't like it so up i stepped:D

I've done 18holes this evening... think the club needs to go back... or i need to ply with 'range balls', cus it doesn't hit my golf balls like it did on the driving range on sunday and monday!! lol

other thn that it did ok with it to say it's first time out.

Of course, range balls spin a lot less than most of the brands you would put in play. What ball are you using and what are the differences in flight you are experiencing - I'm guessing high and right?

I think it's in your head Salsa, on a range it's wide open so you just swing away. Try and do the same on the course and trust it, believe me it wont be the club:p
