remapping in midlands

Has anyone tried "scoobyrace tuning" for there impreza.
They advertise on ebay, it seems they dont use ekutec software and only charge £345.
dont want to try them and end up with a damaged car so would just like to see if they are worth trying.
Could anyone recomend anywere else near birmingham.

Have been using Powerstation for Ecutek remapping, but it can be expensive.Have been chatting to Mark at Thwaites developments about open source mapping, which i may try as im not overly happy with the way mine is performing. He is based in Warwick and will only take you about 40 minutes from Brum.Check his website out...Worth a phone call at the very least.:thumb:

Another vote for Mark, give him a buzz he'll be happy to help, only about 20mins from Solihull/B'ham airport...

Thanks to everyone who recommended Mark and the team at Thwaites Development.
Just got the car back after them supplying and fitting full exhaust system, fuel pump and remap.
Car feels fantastic and seems i saved a fair bit of cash compared to what other companies are charging for the same mods.
A very proffesional service and a very straight honest person to deal with, what more can you ask for.

Little bit late i know, but Pole Position Uk ltd based in Willenhall can map your newage impreza for £300. They also offer full fitting service. They have achieved 320+BHP out of wrx and 380+BHP out of STI. Worth bearing in mind for the future.:)

Rovermb6,

Did you get a printout of what bhp its pushing now....

Have you seen proven results on the rollers.....

Just wondering, as his prices look quite good but I don't know much about 'open source' compared to the more well known ECUtek.

Is it possible for him to turn the car back to standard at some point in the future?....

To the best of my knowledge ' open source ' is an old copy of Ecutek pirated off the 'net. Ecutek spend many many hours writing software and developing safe versions for licenced dealers to use. Ecutek also have training, support and back up systems. You will not get any of that from pirate copies.

I would not trust pirate software to run my expensive Subaru [ or any other ] engine.

PS I am not an Ecutek dealer.

Be careful, all that glistens is not gold.

AndrewC 21 July 2009 08:48 PM

David,

I believe that accusation was proven to be unfounded back in January 2005.

Colby Boles has fully documented the reverse engineering of Denso and Mitsubishi ECUs and the subsequent development of ECUFlash and associated tools.

Well iv'e used, most as local to me as poss in the past and found TSL (Expensive but better that the rest) But only found out about Thwaites by chance as i was doing a big heating job on a guys house in Claverdon and his neighbour had a Thwaites Developments scoob on his drive. Arter a ten miniute chat with this guy RAVING about Mark, i thought i'll give Thwaites a go. The guy is not only a genius, his customer attention is unbelievable, always returns calls (even if its next day)always happy to talk you through what you REALLY NEED, not just to make money out of you. AND WONT SELL YOU/FIT YOU, anything you dont need. Mapped my P1, and only on safe boost (will not map more than safe no matter how much you beg him) after rebuilding my heads and what a wicked map, comes in low down and pulls and pulls, absoloutley transformed my P1. Cant reccomend him highly enough, Thwaites is a great set up, with enthusiastic staff and a customer service second to none. Some of the, "I'm bigger than you, Scooby specialists", could well learn a bit from Thwaites about customer service/satisfaction and quality.

And so say all of us:thumb:Am currently running ecutek software and am just not happy with the way its running.310 bhp on the rollers but no real torque.
Have had a chat with Mark and will hopefully be having it open source mapped.
Am slightly reluctant due to the money already spent on the licence and remaps etc and the fact that the open source mapping will scrap whats already been done...
Am confident in Marks advice though:notworthy

hi, car is running 298/299 hp/tq.
havent had it on the rollers yet but it feels amazing, they really transformed my car, i was expecting about 280 hp and am quite suprised what he managed on the standard td04.
Im fairly certain the car can be returned back to standard as with ecutek.

The GOOD GUYS

I currently live in stourbridge, west midlands and have been referred to Thwaites development form some SN users, even though it took an hour and a half to drive down to them.

Went down to Thwaites Development (TD) after I purchased my scooby blobeye JDM STI and Mark checked the car over and tested drived the car to see if theres any problems that I missed upon inspection when I brought the car, as Im not mechanically minded. Mark was great he check everything for me, for an hour then test drived the car, everything was good.

Mark has a good personality open and friend willing to help, was talking to him about mapping my car as it has a aftermarket exhaust ninja 2 and an airfilter. Dont want extreme power but would like the car to be safe and economic.

scoobiewrx555 15 October 2009 02:41 PM

280bhp at the flywheel is about right for 440cc injectors and a TD04 turbo on a newage 2L WRX. You'll be hard pushed to make a lot more than that safely. Perhaps if you had a decent fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator you probably will make some more by upping fuel pressure but other than that 280 engine bhp is a pretty decent figure.

Also, beware of rolling road figures for engine bhp as they're not always what they are cracked up to be and an experienced Dyno operator can massage dyno figures up or down any way they like (and some often do even though they'll never admit it).

You'll never even get the same bhp figures from 2 same dynos from different operators at different locations, even if they were next door to eachother, and each of those dyno's will give you figures that can be miles apart.

All that really matters is how the car drives and how much power is being put down on the road through the roadwheels i.e. Wheel Horse Power (WHP) not what is estimated to be engine bhp derived from estimated drivetrain losses.

If you want accurate engine bhp take your engine out and stick it on an engine dyno....that's the only way!!

WOW!, some proper commonsense advice.:thumb: Well said that man.:luxhello:

Our rolling road should be finished and in use in a couple, maybe 3, weeks time. Then we'll be able to see exactly what is what powerwise, for anyone who needs a straight deal.

Plus remapping and improvements with provable results.

I trained on a rolling road in the sixties when they were still clockwork and you're right, you can make them say whatever you want them to say.

Driveability is always the key. We had a guy whose car was 'awesome' and the fastest thing he'd ever sat in .......... until he got a rolling road result he didn't like. Then all of a sudden, the car was crap and had never gone properly.....:brickwall

We intend to give before and after results on anything that is here [ that runs ] for any power upgrades, then we all know where we stand.

Of course, if you're upgrading from a standard 2.0 to 2.1, 2.33 or 2.5 there's no point, as the result will be far above the start point.

l'll post up when we are open for business with the rollers.

Crazy thought I know, but can non-turbo Impreza's be open source mapped?

Yes.

Trouble is though is that the gains are relatively small as there isnt the option of upping boost to provide the almost instant increase in torque/power.

Yields respectable results though as would any car where the fueling and ignition has been optimised. Back to basics tuning.
