Gearbox oil to help syncro crunch

Hi guys I have a crunch when im changing upto 4th (not back down) Im pressuming the syncro. I have read on a lot of sites about the GM Syncromesh and its magical powers that has stopped the crunching !!!!
I cannot seem to find it available anywhere allthough im a bit skeptical.
Is there such an oil that can help with this or have I got to just face up to the fact the box is going to have to come out and cost me a fortune....
What about the castrol syntrax ? I heard this is good but not suitable in a sti type r ?
The car is a my99 type r by the way as I think it makes a difference that it has the dccd.
Any info would be appreciated .
thanks in advance

cheers for replies.
So I take it thats ok to use in the type r ???
Do i need to fluch or just drain and fill ?
Any idea how much it holds or just take it slowly !

mit 16 June 2009 10:30 PM

It'll be good for your type r.
Drain the oil after a run, as it's nice and thin when warm, no flush needed. Mine had a magnetic drain plug, which i think is standard, give that a clean too.(make sure theres no big metal lumps on it!
I put in 4L in mine, and it read perfect on the stick. The rear diff takes a 1L.

I use syntrax in my type r.. its a god send.
you fill up just over the full to get third i think.. thats what i did anywat and its spot on.
Highly recomend syntrax!!

I always used Redline Heavy weight shock proof oil. Sorted out the crunches that Syntrax couldnt reach!

dj219957 17 June 2009 05:12 PM

syntrax solved my 2nd gear crunch.
its expensive though at £12 a litre
i slapped some cheap £6 comma crap in the diff ;)

When I got my UK MY97, it had a high mileage and there was often a nasty crunch when going into first and sometimes 4th. 1,500 miles ago I changed the oil, using Redline Lightweight Shockproof. It's never crunched since, totally transformed driving the car :) It's not cheap (£17 a litre IIRC) but it's totally worth it. I used to regularly read one of the big VW forums, and Redline oils have a very good reputation for sorting our gearbox crunches and noises.

I have crunching issues and a bit of a whine in 2nd and 3rd.I was looking at the redline stuff but had been reading that its not suitable for syncromesh gearboxes, i have read this wrong?

Not from what I've heard, the boxes have syncs that are funny with really slick oil like fully synth...castrol just helps the syncs work better and as long as you've not had that friday feeling crunchy for ages then jobs a good un. ;)

Sc0oby 03 July 2009 07:26 AM

better to use redline MT90 on the gearbox and redline 75W90 on the rear diff as they have friction modifier in them

mrmarc 03 July 2009 02:38 PM

the mt90 is a gl4 though.you need gl5 in the box right?

wraggy78 04 July 2009 09:15 PM

Update !!!

Hi I have changed the oil and used castrol driveline (syntrax)
I have now covered 200 + miles since and must say the box is sweet now seem to go after about 85 ish miles and it aint come back yet !!!! RESULT...:luxhello::luxhello::luxhello::luxhello:: luxhello::luxhello:

Any tips on how to drain the oil from the gearbox?

14N-FR 04 August 2009 03:38 PM

Mine crunches when going into 6th, so a gearbox oil change is definitely on the cards!

Can I just ask though, does your crunching stop when you change into neutral then put it into gear?

Just get a bucket or something to collect the old oil and just take the plug out and let it drain.. also take the level stick out and you should be fine. Just fill it up carefully or you will get gear oil EVERY where lool and it stinks too.. fiilling the box up will also fill your transfer aswell so you dont have to worry about that. I filled mine slightly over the full mark as it is supposed to help lubricate 3rd. You should get rid of your crunches in afew miles.

Can you update us on how to do thr tranny aswell please

dazdaz69 16 August 2009 05:26 PM

do you use the castrol as an addative to the standard gbox oil, or do you put the full 4 litres on castrol syntrax in, mines a 1993 wrx import and its crunching from 4th to 5th but only when giving it some beans.
Also do you refill the oil through the dipstick or is there a seperate filler that im not seeing? thanks

mrmarc 16 August 2009 05:31 PM

no use castrol on its own its not an additive.
just refill using the dipstick tube.
if its the same as a 2001 car that is..i would think it was

dazdaz69 16 August 2009 05:34 PM

i would think they are the same, cant see any harm in filling through the dipstick as it all goes in the same place.
lets hope this works then or looks like im gonna have to spend some money

mit 16 August 2009 06:33 PM

Yep, dipstick on the classic to, only way!

wraggy78 16 August 2009 09:10 PM

yeah i replaced whole lot of oil. and refill through dipstick..

guess what .. STILL NO CRUNCHING :luxhello: gearbox feels totally different its transformed it in my opinion...
gonna look at putting a six speed box in next year as on the motorway it just so needs a 6th gear.....

fastboyslim 16 August 2009 10:16 PM

This looks like something i need to do soon.

dazdaz69 17 August 2009 10:18 AM

this is sounding very promising!

millzy555 17 August 2009 07:24 PM
