over heating problem. needing help please
 

Hi, i own a imprezza 96 wrx import, but suddenly got this problem off over heating,the water is not circulating what is causing this, but we dont know why it ant circulating!! the headgasket has been tested and is ok! the waterpump is brand new and is working fine, and thermostat has been checked too. the engine has been flushed and radiator and NO blockeges or air leaks. please if any one know what the problem is or any ideas please can you get back to me. thank you

only thing i can think mate is an airlock sumwhere or a high point in the pipework

it's the headgasket don't rely on a sniffer test to see if they are ok

we done test on headgasket were it should change colour if its gone, but it didnt change colour at all. is there any other way to test it please? it is a new recon engine wot was fitted in feb and iv done 1,500 miles in it so far before this happened?

yes theres a few tell tale signs mate
do your heaters fire hot constant or warm?????
is it constantly overheating ???
check your oil fill cap and dipstick for a creamy residue???
check your water level??
engine warning light on???

As scoobyboy said, a negative sniffer test isn't a guarantee of the HG having NOT failed on the EJ engine. The colour of the fluid won't necessarily change when testing at idle, as it's off boost. What often happens is that when on-boost while driving, then a slightly failed HG can open up a tiny amount at the failure point, releasing combustion gases into the coolant system - this is what causes the overheating.... And happened to me!

Go for a drive and boot it using plenty of high boost (but making sure you don't fry the engine). Come back, pop the lid, remove the header tank pressure cap... Has the coolant level gone down (wet by the battery tray) and does it also reek of horrible combustion gases?! If so, HG defo gone.

ditto joz, same happened to me, was convincing myself that it was airlock!!

****! i might have smae problem on a 2002 bugeye wrx. have a slight oil leak and after a run i can smell a hot oil smell. when stationary it starts to "smoke" a blue-ish plume and reaks of oil.getting checked at xtreme scoobys tomorrow but i hope all is ok. are they good down there?

That's right. The negative sniffer test leads one down the - wrong! - garden path of airlock diagnosis. :brickwall

It could simply be the driver side cam cover gasket worn, allowing oil onto the hot header. This is a very common foible on the EJ engine Had it on mine). Is the smoke coming from the driver side of the engine?

If it is that, Knowlesy'll piss the job. ;)

um well its hard to tell. it seems to be coming out underneath on passenger side near the cat....but then if i open the bonnet it looks like its coming up behind the intercooler but hard to tell as the wind is blowing and hard to locate the sourse been panicking about it for days just want to get out and enjoy it

Obviously it can happen on passenger side one as well.

Check oil level tomoz morning to make sure it's not a proper oil leak. You could put a load of plain paper or newspaper underneath overnight to see if it's a heavily dripping leak or not, etc...

sorry to hyjack this thread,but got me worried now...my heaters are always blowing hot on my new engine,but no other syptoms no overheating,now creamy reidue water ok & no dash light on,starts & runs ok:confused::confused:

mattyk,sounds like it could be just rocker cover gasket,my mates old classic was the same

well i have been checking the road where its left and nothing there!! bizare all though the plastic tray underneath the engine does have oil patches so guessing it has collected there. see what they say tomoz and keep you informed

Yeah not a big job. Hour's labour IIRC :wonder:. then a cheap new cam cover gasket and some sealer - job done.
