bottom end knocking.

Hi all,

As I am looking to buy my first Impreza I have seen one for sale locally.
I have not much technical knowledge about these cars yet!
It is a 1999 sti type R 2-door with a 2.5 bottom end combined with a sti type r red top head. (I dont know much about that lol)
Now the car bottom end noise. What might that be? any usual problems?
I never heard the noise but have been told it has bottom end noise.

In worst case scenario I will have to get the bottom end rebuilt I believe?

What might that cost?

What else should I look for in these cars?

Many thanks. Apologies for the newbie questions.;)

Well scoobys suffer from week bottom ends the knocking is more lightly to be a bearing spun of the crank so that will mean engine out split the block have the crank reground and new race bearings also gives you a chance to see whats in her..

Is there a more fuller description of other mods done to the car?
Fitting a 2.5 to a std ECU & fuelling would have ended in tears.
It could also point towards the original 2.0 engine failed (not the first time on 99 JDM STis imported without any fuelling adjustments).

Cost wise would be IRO £2,500 - £3,000 to sort the engine. If the car is otherwise std and you keep a 2.5 engine then budget for ECU work at minimum.

Finding out the other mods would help decide whether its worth pursuing.

If you have no mechanical knowledge, i would stay well clear of the above car and get one that's in perfect working order

REPLACED! ;) (or if original is salvageable, then polished).

what exactly does the bottom end knock sound like, mines making a noise low down?

going rate is £600 for a new crank alone u might need the block rebored or honed while your at it with oversize pistons etc.

A 'heavy' knocking noise from the bottom of the engine. More of a duller sound - not 'thin' and trebley like top-end rattles. :(

It's quite a distinctive noise - it will rise and fall as revs rise and fall...... It's awful :brickwall
