:wonder::wonder::wonder:stripped my subaru legacy down today.
it was smoking with oil init, upon stipping it down found oil in the intercooler cud this be the cause of the oily smoke or could it be something moore sinister.

Get a catch can :)

waggy3 10 June 2009 06:40 PM

lol

chrisdicko 10 June 2009 06:49 PM

Thats what you need if your getting oil in the inter cooler....

waggy3 10 June 2009 06:56 PM

is that because of back pressure

chrisdicko 10 June 2009 06:59 PM

The breathers from the engine do chuck some oil out. This then is fed back in to the turbo intake pipe.....which then obviously goes in to your inter cooler.

waggy3 10 June 2009 07:03 PM

what ituck out of the inter cooler could fill a cup
and have found out the last person to have the car was a trader who put oil thickener in the engine oil

chrisdicko 10 June 2009 07:24 PM

Sounds like you need an oil change as well then!!

To be honest I don't know how much oil is normal. But catch cans are a lot bigger than a cup.

waggy3 10 June 2009 07:41 PM

what would i need to clean intercooler out???

scooby-k 10 June 2009 09:13 PM

petrol is pretty good for cleaning it out.

waggy3 10 June 2009 09:31 PM

will try that in the morning
how much would it cost for the turbo to be reconed???

p1mat 10 June 2009 09:34 PM

i had a rebuild on my p1 mate and then about 8 mounths later started to get aload of oil in the intercooler only noticed when i had a frount mount fitted so i got a oil catch tank fitted as well but it hasent helped at all cos its now of the road for a while why i rebuild every thing for more power and the intercooler was covered again it was even coming of the dumpvalve scooby clinic reccomened a engine rebuild

had the car a year and blown 2 clutches up 1 gearbox 2 engines :cuckoo:

so going fully forged 2.1
ppg gearbox
and allready got exedy twin plate
please no more explosions :D

waggy3 10 June 2009 09:40 PM

only noticed oil in the intercooler when i changed the oil, but the last person had put oil thickering in

Jay_ 10 June 2009 09:59 PM

There are two issues which can lead to oil in your intercooler....

OE cars have the head & crankcase breathers vented to the air intake, the thinking is that the vapours are just burnt off in the combustion process. If you bypass these to a catchcan then you don't have any oil vapours returned to the intake.

If you still have oil in the intercooler after doing the bypass mod then your turbo seals are probably on the way out and letting oil back into the compressor housing. Turbo service would be recommended if it's bad enough.

aah !

You need one of these.... :wonder:

Crawford Performance

I have been looking at these recently and was surprised that Crawford Performance - the people who prepare Ken Blocks engines / cars - have a stage 2 sti package of ecutek + downpipe only + air oil seperator . Never seen anybody recommend such a device as a basic tuning mod... must be good ?

What turbo is it?

You can get a TD04 for around £50 and a bit more for a TD05.
I paid £200 for a VF28 which had been refurbed.
