crank/cam sensors?
 
hi all again,
my 95 sti has just cut out, i have checked all the usuall things like
coils
plugs
fuel pressure
fuel pump
fuses
relays
harness plugs
vacum pipes
and cam belt but nothing is amiss, it just keeps turning over like the timing is out.
what would it do if the cam or crank sensor has gone, cheers phil.

Hello Phil, I know that if you unplug the "cam" sensor it will not start and just turn over. I'd check that it's plugged in ok, connections are clean and that no wires are fraid or broken.
If it's a 95 I think you can check the fault codes easily enough. You can on my 96 (may be different though).
Under the steering column amongst all the wires you should be able to see two black connectors (Read Memory connectors) and two green connectors (Test Mode connectors).
What you need to do is connect the two green connectors together, then turn the engine power on (but do not attempt to turn over) so the dash board lights come on. What your looking for is the "Check engine" light. Far right corner on my dash. It should start to blink on and off. If it is a continuous and an even flash then there are no fault codes found. But if it seems to flash irregular then you need to write this down abit like morse code. A long pulse (1+ secs) indicates tens and the short pulse (0.4 secs) indicates ones. It will however go round and round in circles so it's a good idea to watch it for awhile just to check that theres not more than one fault code being shown.
eg. two long pulses and three short = 23 (Maf Sensor)
I think the cam position sensor code is number 13 and the crank position sensor is number 11, there are some more indepth explanations of this out there but I hope this has helped. Unfortunately you may not find your problem this way but it's worth a look.

now that was a good reply, thanks very much for explaning how to fault code find, i never thought of doing that and didnt know how to do it either, ill give it a go tomorrow and let you know what i find, thanks again and all the best, phil.
