private reg's on ebay???

i was wondering if anyone has either bought or sold private egs on ebay? i'm assuming if you get one you recieve a certificate or something and not actually the plates themselves? then what would i have to pay to dvla once certificate is recieved?

i know this sounds like a daft question but i have literally no knowledge on the subject.

could someone talk me throught the process?

many thanks, scott.

i bought one at christmas myself off ebay,

If the certificate is already on retention in the previous owners name(they have paid the £105 fee), I had to send the certificate to the DVLA signed by the previous owner stating that i will be a named Nominee on the certificate along with a £25 cheque, they then post it back to the owner of the retention with your name as a nominee on the certificate, if the seller is genuine then they will sign it again and send it to you, what you do then is take it to your local DVLA office with your docs and they will for free then put it on your car. Otherwise if they taking it straight from a car they can now sign the certificate straight over to you as the owner however they will probabily make you pay the £105 retention fee.

Be careful, I did here of one person who bought a set of plates as a present for his missus and literally got the plates and no paperwork so were useless. Not someone I know, just something I heard from a friend who was selling hers on ebay.
