Wierd noise

Im having a bit of bad luck with the Scooby at the moment and it seems more is on the horison either way im not giving up lol

Right on idle the car is making a "clanking, ratting" sound - BUT it doesnt seem like its from the engine it seems to be around the gearbox area.

Could this be the propshaft?

Seems to only do it on idle aswell or when going very very slow and it goes away after a couple of miles.

What could it be?

JDM_Stig 26 May 2009 08:35 AM

does it go away when you depress the clutch?
Could be the concentric slave cylinder.

g7prs 26 May 2009 08:42 AM

Loose heat shields?

Connor_scotland 26 May 2009 09:21 AM

Defo not loose heatshields

It least its not the engine knocking haha

When it does it again i will record the noise.

Connor_scotland 26 May 2009 09:38 AM

just been out and started the car and there is no noise - Its doing it intermittently

Connor_scotland 26 May 2009 11:07 AM

Started it to go for petrol and its doing ti again. But then went away after 30 seconds

Is this something i will be safe to just leave OR am i driving into Epic Failure as i need to go to Glasgow on Wednesday

p1doc 26 May 2009 11:22 AM

hard to say,no local trusted garage can have a look for you?
martin

Connor_scotland 26 May 2009 11:48 AM

yea my mate is a mechanic and is going to have a peek tonight im just in work trying to think of what it could be

Pain in the hoop

cossie-nutter 27 May 2009 12:54 AM

Sounds like Clutch Release bearing IMHO and will more than make a noise when warm etc...

Let us know how you get on matey?

If you can get a large good screw driver and listen at the end of it (Like a glass to a wall) to see if you can pin point the noise and then it wont be to hard to work out! :thumb:

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 08:16 AM

Ok mate

Took it round to my mates last night and it wouldnt do it at all. No noise at all

Started doing it on the way to work so i have made a small video of it and you can hear it. But it went away after about 20seconds

Its wierd putting the clutch in or out makes NO difference or havnig in gear makes no difference.

Just out of curiosity - If it was the big ends would they rattle occasionally or ALL the time on idle

The noise goes away when the revs are applied then when the revs drop back down its usually gone lol

Very mysterious

Any info would be great or ideas.

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 09:07 AM

Manged to get a video uploaded of it at work :-0

YouTube - Impreza knock - Not sure whats knocking as its only on idle OCCASIONALLY

Bearing in mind it goes away when rev'd just a little and this only happens occasionally

And ONLY on idle - it doesnt sound like its coming from the engine

Engine is running sweet and pulls like a train still

Doesnt knock at revs at all

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 11:52 AM

Does anyone have any ideas?

Whats pissing me off more is im off on holiday next week and need the car to do a 300mile trip

Im thinking of filling the car with petrol tonight and going on an epic adventure of mystic discovery to see if the car will get any worse.

Unless anyone has any other checks i should do.

When i finish work im going to - Check the heatsheilds, check under the car for anything broken/loose etc etc

cossie-nutter 27 May 2009 12:08 PM

I can't hear anything on that video!

Get the car jacked up and get under there and look for anything loose!

Could it be exhaust rattle sometimes when bringing on load ?

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 12:39 PM

I dont know if this is coincidence but my crank pulley looks buckled on idle - If it is i assume it is the feared bottom end thats funked

we noticed it before that it wasnt spinning proper didnt look bad at all but now it seems worse but onviously goes away when revved as it levels out

jaytc2003 27 May 2009 01:40 PM

I would expect a bottom end knock to be there all the time, not just intermittently. I mean you could rev and it would disappear (or get worse) and then when you got back to idle you would hear it again.

Have you done anything with the exhaust downpipe recently? There is a bracket on the downpipe near the gearbox and if that is loose (or bent - caused by speed bumps perhaps) the exhaust can clatter occasionally. I had this when I changed downpipe a few years back

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 02:15 PM

nope 100% doesnt knock all the time only intermitteldy

Also i just decat'd the car last week

look at that bracket I mentioned then, mine used to make the noise more when in reverse

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 02:52 PM

did it knock like in my video mate

Also been speaking to a specialist in Forres who seems to think its not the bottom end as he said it would knock all the time not just occasionally.

He also mentioned about a tensioner on the front on the engine if its leaked oil it will make a knocking sound occasionally which can simulate bottom end.

I need to get the car checked over. so hopefully getting a Subaru dude to look at the car tonight

JonsGreenGoblin 27 May 2009 03:00 PM

It could be downpipe as mentioned above as I get something similar when i start the car like a rattling noise. got decat downpipe but when i put my standard downpipe on for MOT it went away!! Strange so i just put it down as that causing it!

Hope you find out soon pal

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 03:13 PM

Cheers

Well this is just proper random and only on idle randomly

I got told if it was bottom end it would be there ALL the time and at high rpm aswell

Its only on idle occasionally

cossie-nutter 27 May 2009 03:48 PM

Now heres a thing...

I had to take my down pipe last week and when I put it back on I forgot to put the bolt back in the bracket that bolts the down pipe to the gear box and all seems fine apart from the odd time it rattled sounding like the back of the engine!

Jacked the car back up and found I missed a bolt and when bolted on the noise has gone!

Have you also tried getting someone to sit in the car with the hand brake on in gear slowly bringing it on to load just enough for the clutch to engage and the car dip under load ? While someone has there head in the engine bay ?

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 03:53 PM

yep have done that and it doesnt knock at all mate

Will get under it when i finish work in 8mins - DAM its been a long day

Hopefully its not the bottom end - i have the moneys to fix it but would rather not but i love the car

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 05:03 PM

Right had my mate round who has built a fair few EJ20s now and has said its 100% not the bottom end - We have driven the car for 45mins and its not made the rattle at all and that was from cold - Checked everything but cant find it but he said for sure its not the engine.

We are taking it to the farm to put it on the ramps at 7pm for another few checks aswell

g7prs 27 May 2009 05:21 PM

Did you check all the heatshields as i mentioned earlier on?

My car has one that sometimes rattles when the car is ticking over and other times it doesnt. It sometimes does when pulling away in first but you dont hear it in anyother gear. Its a metalicy clanging rattle sound. I cant hear your video to compare as i am work.

Connor_scotland 27 May 2009 06:02 PM

going up at 7pm to check them mate

Its annoying as i dont know enough about Imprezas to diagnose it

Will update this thread later on - Reason im "rushing" is im away on Holiday on Wednesday - I can get turbo engine tomorrow if need be as its in Glasgow :-)
