handles well but brakes are poop!!!
 

Had the chance to give the car a proper testing tonight on way home from work, i am well pleased with the handling, it has a nice amount of oversteer under power and not too much understeer into a bend, a nice balance i thought so i had some great fun with a few four wheel drifts and some slidy back end action. The problem came when i hit some proper twisties and after the first few bends the brakes rapidly deteriorated to the point where i had to slow right down to let them cool. When i then puled over and had a look at the brakes there was a lot of smoke from the pads and the discs were somewhere between blue and straw coloured with heat. Is this normal for standard brakes??? I have ordered already some grooved discs from CRN Products and red mintex pads, is this likely to solve the problem???

Sounds like your pads are finished, check them in the morning!

get some decent pads, like a pagid 29
change the fluid and get braided hoses.
That will be enough.

Assuming you have a Classic ...

Do you have the 2 pot sliding calipers on the front, if you do, they are 'poo'.

If this is what you have, seriously consider changing to the later 4 pot calipers (as found on bugeyes etc), or if your budget allows, change to the STi Brembos, you will get a lot of stopping power for your money, and as mike has said, change your fluid and get some braided hoses :thumb:

edited to add, for the above you will have to change your discs to suit the calipers obviously.

Mine is not a classic, its a blobeye with the four pots as standard. I am hoping it is just a case of worn down discs which arent dissipating heat and old/knackered pads. The fluid is not failing as the pedal stays hard even when the brakes are not really doing much any more. I think i will get the new pads and discs fitted and then change the fluid and hope it improves. I was very concerned as i have never experienced fade quite as bad, its even worse than a 68 mustang i used to own and that had drums all round!!!!

that'll be standard pads for you. ;) uprated discs will also help a little but decent pads, some braided lines and good fluid will be plenty for the road if you already have the four pots.

i went overkill wil the brake setup on my last scoob and all they done was screeched all the time through not getting them hot enough on the road. never got to use them on track before i had to sell it :(

Pagid 29's will stop the fade.. DS2500's fade badly if very spirited. DS3000's will knacker your wheels and eat discs.
Change teh fluid and i would suggest new discs as you may well have cooked these with the poor pads.

mike will know brakes fella. i can vouch for trying to clean the ds3000 dust off his wheels! :eek:

thanks for the advice peeps, hopefully new brakes will arrive tomorrow and then i can get them fitted for the weekend, will let you know how they are.

I tried DBA's discs on my Bugeye with Pagid pads (forget which ones), and the discs didn't last well at all.

Best thing I did was fit Brembos (as per the STi's) and at the same time, fitted Grooved Brembo discs, car stops superbly now :thumb:

As Mike says though, you may find for your style of driving that the above will do the trick :thumb:

It appears i have it sorted!!! Got new brakes so fitted them today. The car had stood for a while before i got it so when i changed the rear discs and pads i found that the rear pads were siezed in the calipers so abig hammer and lots of cleaning of calipers and that was sorted, the fronts were just generally knackered, discs slightly warped and grooved#, pads look old and beginning to go crumbly. New kit fitted and they work so much better now.

well done, nice to see a few more people working on there own cars !! :)

I have always done my own work on cars, cant do bodywork to save my life but do all my own servicing and repairs, about the only things i havent had to do yet are gearbox and diff rebuilds, have built several engines in the past with good results, the last one i built is still doing my 60 mile round trip for work every day and and is 30k miles since rebuild. Saves me a fortune in repair bills, i went to a scooby specialist to enquire about brakes and was told £400 to do just the fronts, i have done all four corners and it cost me 3 hours and £190, cant go wrong with that choice really!!!

BTW i have studied that picture really hard and if you really concentrate you can just make out a ..........erm, no, sorry my mistake;)
