Miss SWRTWannabe wants to get a pair of rabbits (suitably "adjusted" to make sure we only have a pair!) but all the hutches that we've seen so far in pet shops seem to be really tiny.

So, seeing as it means I can play with power tools (no DIY job is complete without at least one power tool) I thought I'd go about building our own. Anybody here done the same, or is anybody able to offer any advice?

In particular, when treating the wood with preservative, is ordinary wood preservative OK - don't want to be using something that could harm the bunnies.

Thanks in advance

I did just that last year...

Probably cost me like twice as much but the hutch is huge..

I went to a local place that was making them and had a sneak look and gave it a go..

I haven't treated the wood yet... bought some stuff to do it and then thought it might harm the bunnies so the wood is untreated at present...

I used some 2 by 2 wood (what ever the metric equivalent it) and
created a hutch with triangular ends and covered one end with plywood for there night/sleeping area and covered the rest with netting... it is a bit heavy duty and perhaps over the top but we have foxes and a big dog that likes to visit so I made sure it was animal proof from inside out and outside in.

You'll need to put netting on the bottom if it is going on the ground etc.. as they burrow out.. mine tend to bite through the netting if you have holes bigger than about half inch.. problem with the small hole netting is the grass doesn't come through it much when you put the hutch down so I have to move it frequently.

Nothing else I can think to say at the moment...

Good luck

Just get some fish instead, less maintenance, and no s*** on the carpet http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/biggrin3.gifhttp://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/biggrin3.gifhttp://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/biggrin3.gifhttp://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/biggrin3.gifhttp://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/biggrin3.gif

Go down to Halfords and buy a huge subwoofer box, put a wire mesh over the hole and hey presto!!! :D
