Ethernet Connection Not Working On Laptop

Guys,

Trying to hook my craptop upto my router via the ethernet connection and its not doing it, generally the connection itself would light up but there is nothing nadda outta it.

The laptop itself is a Toshiba A200 its thats any help.

Any ideas on how i can switch it back on? sorry i have no clue about computers really:lol1:

Control Panel/Nwt Work Connections - right click the adaptor and 'enable'.

If it reckons it's on then 'Start/Run/cmd'. In the cmd window type 'ping 192.168.x.x' where the latter address is the ip address of your router - should tell you on it's status page if you don't know. If the connection works you should get something like:

Reply from 192.168.x.x: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255

If so then it's working and you need to get us more info .....

[This all assumes xp - but Vista shouldn't be a million miles away].

nope its not coming up with anything useful, if i go into my Network Connections, its shows my Local Area Network as "Network Cable Unplugged" which it aint and it can't resolve the issue.

Its Vista Premium 32bit.

Silly question to ask really but have to tried a different piece of CAT5?

If it is saying the cable is unplugged that means it is enabled.... although saying that Vista is just magic for saying stuff is working when it isn't, do you have the right driver installed for the network card?

I had Vista on my craptop for a while and the soundcard said it was happy and active but no sound would come out, I installed a new driver and it was golden after that!

the cable i'm using works perfectly with the Xbox360 so i know it nor the router is at fault.

Tried to do a driver update and it seems i have the latest ones for the ethernet port.

Going to completely uninstall them then try again hopefully it may help.

Never really use the ethernet connection but i hate finding that something is broken:lol1:

Could well be broken. In which case not sure how you can fix the laptop - other than new mainboard. Or get an ethernet card for any PCI slots you may have on it?
But on the Cat5 issue - have you actually tried a different cable? I assume that "Xbox -> router" would use a straight-through cable like a "PC -> router" rather than a cross-over cable for "PC -> PC"?

What is the speed / duplex settings for the ethernet card? do they match the router?
