Newage Centre Console Swap?

Does anyone have a guide or know how to, or have done this:

Swap the centre console/aircon controls and radio surround etc from a 2003-early2005 model to the later Late2005-2007 model one?

Do the aircon controls connect using the same connectors?

Just done this on my bugeye, but I'm having problems deciding where to relocate the electric mirror switch to, and also the handbrake is different.
Gonna make a post in a sec, and then once I determine what to do with the handbrake, I'll post a guide on how to remove the old console and add the new one mate.

Nice mate - how much did the handbrake end up costing you btw?
And when you say "made a bracket" can I ask what you used?

ScoobaSteve 14 May 2009 07:59 PM

Think the handbrake cost about £25-30.....best try Jap Performance for that :thumb:

It was made from stainless steel, fabricated from our metal tech boys at work, but am going to try and get some done in black to match the dash.

HTH :)

MrNoisy 14 May 2009 08:32 PM

Looks superb; let me know if they'd be interested in fabricating another :D

ScoobaSteve 14 May 2009 08:40 PM

Need to take some proper measurements and pass them on to the guys there, may take a it of time to do tho :)

done mine in 6 hours total, and thats being fusy, relocated the mirror switch and see pic, wire soldiered and heat shrinked, snipped plug off loom, used trailer light 7 core wire to extend loom to panel below steering wheel, was really the only place to put it, took me 30 mins to cut out the hole for the switch to make sure i got a good tight fit.....

got the heater controls sorted, as before was only coming on at 1 speed, was a faulty heat controls, got them out of a wreck,, real happy with the outcome, really freshens the inside, the total cost of this conversion was £155 and that was buying 2 heat controls, the radio brackets i modified to suit 05 dash, just drill another 2 holes in them to suit consol, seen the whole consol on e-bay for £175, if i subtract the cost of the second heat controls it wud have cost me only £110

Got hold of a Hawkeye STI handbrake fitted it with the original gaitor, and re-fitted the 'leccy mirror switch using the lid from a Maplins electronics box. Doesn't look too bad I reckon, the lid plastic's almost an exact colour match:

looks the bizz m8, was going to put mine there too, but as you can see in the pic I got the diff control switches there, they came with the consol, dont work mind you but looks good, lol

didnt change my handbrake, modded the bracket, gater looks a bit loose but will get it stitched up to fit snug.. just its a bit down on the pecking order of the to do list......

got spare silver bits including the vents surrounds, think i will try source carbon fibre matting and cover them, may work, anyone got any ideas where to get some carbon matting ???

I am about to do this swap on my 03 WRX, I have fotted 05 doorcards so can put the mirror switch in the door panel, but on reading on some other sites they mention the stereo brackets need changing for 05 ones, If you did this, do you have the part numbers. Also is the handbrake a straight swap from the 03 one or do I need to change any cables.
Thanks

ScoobaSteve 18 July 2009 02:52 PM

daz,did you require any brackets to fit the 05 doorcards,as i heard they wouldnt fit properly?

Yes you do need different radio brackets, and the handbrake is a straight swap :)

daz1968 18 July 2009 03:20 PM

Thanks, the doorcards needed a few mods, I had to make new speaker brackets to fit the tweeters in the correct position, also I had to cut the handle brackets to clear the switches, then welded a 90 deg piece of steel to the bottom of them to give me something to bolt the switch gear to, its is reletively easy when you trial fit them. Also I had all the 05 switches and plates, I however had to use the 03 switches for all but the drivers window switch as the plugs are different, I just had to trim the webs where the switches fitted to get them to fit in, but again is easy when you try to fit them. Only thing I need to get is the plastic bracket for the rear doors, as the plastic screw at the top doesn't line up so I will try to get this from dealers, then fit them correctly. The guide on scoobypedia is ok, but he did not put any fixings in for the hole in the switch plate, so they would not hold down properly. If you have access to the doors then you could get the parts required, but was not difficult at all, in fact when I get the plastic bits I could take a picture of my modified handle when I fit them. Only other issue I have is the plug on the electric mirror switch is different to the 03 one, but I will probably use some small spade connectors when I sort this out, and extend the wiring to the existing plug. Is a good mod as I think the doorcards look a lot better, Think I will order some stereo brackets Monday so I can have a go at it next weekend.

Thanks

Darren

i just modded mine with 2 holes drilled and futered about, worked a treat for me, thats with an alpine dvd player unit, have just started the carbon wrapping the dash, have done the ashtray so far just to see what it looks like, now going to do all the silver on the dash, have a spare set of 05 & 03, might be a little earner if it works out, not too much but enough for a few beers,

nice call bluebugeye, thnx for the pointer, best bit of kit, can be very fidgity to do, very time consuming, but worth the end result

I have 2 mirror switch surrounds which were made specifically for the job.

They fit where the 2 holes for the DCCD switches fit,so no need to move the switch anywhere.

There is a bit of hacking about of the console for the switch to fit.

They are polished stainless steel and are a perfect fit...will load up some pictures as soon as i can.

You can just see the surround in this pic:-

Well I fitted my 05 console in my 03 wrx today bought the stereo brackets from Subaru and had to use one steel bracket from the 05 car that holds the top vents in, also found that the cable on the handbrake from an 06 sti was a little long so I swapped it with the one on the 03 wrx handbrake and all fitted fine, Just need to sort out my mirror switch in the 05 door panels now, have both circuit diagrams so shouldn't take long for me to knock up a loom conversion for it. I noticed that the newer aircon controls have an auto setting on the left knob for where the air is distributed so even had an improvement on the air con as well. Hoping it will auto clear the screen without having to take the airflow from the face level vents.
