When to change gears??

At what revs is it ideal to shift through the gears in order to get the best acceleration from standstill for a 285bhp wrx?

My basic thought was since the car hits peak torque around 4.5k I would assume that changing just above this 5.5-6k would be best.

My mate on the other hand says performance is maximised when you change gears between the 7k to redline mark??!

Thoughts?

I thought it was traditional to change when the needle was on it's way back down when the limiter kicks in?

As long as it's still pulling there shouldn't be problem, you can usually feel when the torque curve is on the back down. You could always use your private runway to find the best option.........

You mean to say that you change gear after it hits the limiter:wonder:?

I always change gear just as the needle its redline on the way up.

lloydee sorry to go of topic but what mods you got to get 285BHP and what year is your car?

You should change a little after max. power, not max torque.

In my car I find that if I change at about 6K it brings me straight into the sweet spot

You want to figure out the best point so your revs drop down to the beginning of your peak torque curve (will be more or less the lowest point you are on full boost if you have a boost gauge to watch). I can't say where this is as I drive a Legacy GT-B which has the same power but I get peak boost (about 1.2 bar) between 3000-4000RPM, then a gap (0.5bar) as it switches over to twin turbo mode and then 1.2 bar again from 5000rpm trailing off slightly to 1.0 bar at 7.5k redline. For the best acceleration I have to shift pretty much at redline otherwise I end up back in the valley at about 4,500rpm with low boost.

Should be simpler to figure it out for your car though :)

Not in my car only in a company/hire car. just before the red line seems to keep things on the boil for me.
