My MG ZS 180
 

Now that i have got the thing looking reasonable, i thought i would take some decent pictures.


Work done so far

Fix the VIS motors so it makes full power (both were not working)
Refurbish all 4 alloys (silver hammerite FTW)
Find and paint a front spoiler (was missing)
Paint front bumper (due to somebody clipping it)
Paint both sides of the car (due to spacker SMART repair jobs that were gash)
Fit new side repeater (because i spazed out and left one ontop of a radiator and it melted lmfao)

I like it, but am battening down the hatches for when the MG haters arrive en masse.

Cracking looking car Sticky :thumb: I was always a fan of the ZS 180 looks.

They probably wont bother coming into the thread unless i mention the uk newage wrx that i blew away the other day on the dual carriage way ;)

i had "fun" learning how to spray pearl paint with this car, i painted the 2 sides and the front end, outside the carwash last weekend :lol:

came out alright :D

You buy a Rover you have to expect the gags that go along with ownership, it looks great, have you fitted the tartan rugs to the back seat and cushions in the back windows yet???;)

I had a mk2 before I got the RB, and considering what it is and how cheaply it was made it was still a fantastic car. I do miss it some times, the noise of the V6 throught the twin pipes I had and the way it turned heads

I do quite miss going M3 baiting. It reqularly scared cars much bigger and more expensive than it lol

quite a nice early 90's honda civic :D

after i removed the side repeater to machine polish the paint, i put the repeater on top of the radiator in the office to dry out (had moisture inside)

it melted :lol: and i could not find anybody selling the proper ZS smoked side repeaters, so i ordered some smoked civic ones from fleabay yesterday, imagine the suprise when they were deliverd this morning :eek:

imagine my pissed off face when i realised that they did not feckin fit :mad:

had to modify the little beggers to get them in the rover wings, and the bulb holder was different as well :rolleyes:

i was a bit gutted about that :razz: :lol1:

explain the vis motors thing what do they do?

I was reading a review here and couldn't help but notice this in the penultimate sentence....

FAIL

My last car, before someone parked their car in the boot, was the 180 hatch. Really enjoyed driving it. Handled great for a FWD. Reliability was touch and go compared to the 216GSi I had before (Honda engine), but still found it to be an entertaining car.

Am really happy with the upgrade though :)

The VIS motors switch the inlet tract from a short to a long one to give some lower rpm torque (god do they need it!)
I replaced a VIS on our old MG ZT and the inlet was covered in oil. The oil and VIS failures go hand in hand so I fitted a catch tank which cleaned things up.

i might have this the wrong way around but you get the general jist...

they run with a variable inlet manifold

at low speeds the v6 engine is closed off and it actually runs as 2 x 3 cylinder engines to give a low speed torque boost, this opens up at around 3krpm due to one of the motors opening up a flap that allows the engine to breath as a V6

they also have 6 power valves that open up at around 4500ish rpm which give a shorter inlet tract and yet another torque peak.

both of my motors have failed, so the flaps were stuck in odd positions, screwing up the map big style.

the solder joints crack on them, its an easy enough fix but most people don't even realise they are buggered (i did not) i only took them apart because it was raining all day at work and i had nothing better to do, i probably gained about 40 bhp from an hours work (going off other peoples rolling road results when swapping out dud motors for fresh ones)

it seams to drive pretty well now, at least with how i would expect a 180/190 bhp car to drive (dropping down from a scooby with 400lbft was a bit of a shock at first :D )

there is a 06 plate one on fleabay at the moment (around £1750)
its got chavy black lexus lights fitted, but the rest of it looks ok

06 plate v6 sports saloon for around £2k ? its a feckin bargain even if its a 90`s civic in drag (pretty nice drag tho :D )

they drive 10 times better then i expected them to to be honest, i was pleasantly shocked, its a shame everybody thinks they are just stock rovers with a bodykit :D

Baiting M3's in one, really, what sort of performance/power have they got then???

I had several Civics including the 1.6 & 1.8 VTI variants so a fan of sorts...

I honestly didn't know they were Rover designed 4-cam 24 valve V6 engines in them, until I saw one on Sunday with that written in the small print under the number plate.

First MG to have that sort of motor was a rather nifty little machine called a Metro 6R4!

not enough to beat an M3 :thumb:

to be honest i think it might have been an sti because it had gold wheels and a badge on the back saying STImulation or somthing ?

Removed the battery for a few hours today to fit the "sheddist" clutch mod (ie use honda civic hydraulics instead of the gash rover ones)

and when i put the battery back on, the MG Rover groups build quality was shown for what its worth, the car "clocked" itself and the ODO went from 57k miles to 47k miles :lol:
