2001 Bugeye Buying Advice.

Hi all!

Im new to the Scooby scene and currently looking for a 'bugeye' Impreza.

Ive seen a 2001 X plate sti with 40k on the clock for 5 grand, No mods proper standard car. Sounds too good to be true? The car is an import with service history from the owners garage (hes a technician and has done all the work on the car since import) What kind of things should I try and find out before I go and look at the car? Its a 6 hour drive for me and I dont fancy it if it turns out to be a cabbage :Suspiciou.

Ive seen some high res photos and it looks in good shape but pictures can lie!

Oh and he bought it from this place in 2005 Japanese performance car specialists - Torque-GT.co.uk Any heard of them/used them before?

Any help appreciated :thumb:

Stuart.

Put up a link to the pictures :D

Just about right on the price for the unloved bugeye, mind you it's currently the performance bargain of the century :D

mini disc player, how cool :lol1:

Looks like a very nice car :)

The badge is the wrong colour for an STi, the wheels are from a later model as they have little dimples between the spokes (the originals were smooth), for this model of bugeye the radio mast should be in the a-pillar as it's only the later MY02 cars which had the radio in the rear window de-mister, The intercooler scoop should be a little taller for the STi with vertical strengtheners to stop the scoop flexing (unless it's the picture), it's been de-badged on the boot................

Clocks rev to 8000 RPM and the underbonnet pic looks 100%

Well worth a look and if the paperwork is Ok then a real bargain :D

Thanks for the replys, Anyone know what I should look for in the flesh? I will check to see if its been undersealed and any signs of damage repair?

If the aerial is meant to be on the pillar does that mean its been removed and painted at some point in its life? Also I thought it was only the blob eyes that had the bigger scoop?

How rare is the minidisc player? :lol1: It also has sat nav.. But its in japanese and I dont think it comes with a disc .

The original phase I bugeye bodyshell had the radio mast in the a-pillar, the later phase II bodyshell had the radio reciever in the heated rear screen. The Jap market came first so even though it's a MY01 car it likely has a Phase II bodyshell.

The bugeye STi had a taller scoop than the WRX :D

As I mentioned it looks a nice bargain if sound :D

My JDM Bug STI does not have an external aerial and it to is an 'X' reg. The scoop is a point though. Yes the blob eye is taller, but the bug STI has a slightly taller one than the bug WRX and the scoop should have vertical veins down it.

Don't forget to check for the common knocking rear shocks.

The WRX wheels were smooth, the STI ones always had the dimples :thumb:

my 2001 jdm sti7 has aerial in rear window, so thats fine. Intresting that the scoop looks wrong could be replaced bonnet from WRX so maybe front end damage at some point?

That's the scoop. If they were smooth, I'll proverbially eat my hat.

To the OP: from the pics looks like a lovely car. Be aware though that it's not very well known that the JDM cars were available in 3 'trim' levels.

The trim levels go:
KL (no front diff)
EL (front diff, no HIDs, no tints)
GL (front diff, HIDs, tints)

The UK STI looks to have begin life in EL status.

Check it out to make sure you get the full GL :thumb: (Although in Russian this site may help you SUBARU - look for the 8th field down). Or just confirm with the owner that it has factory standard HIDs and that the tints are factory dyed glass.
