amp cutting out at loud volume ?
as the tittle says. my set up is a 4 channel amp , comps in the front and a sub. when i turn the tunes up loud the amp shuts down. on the amp display it comes up with a code (CUR). according to my booklet this means
- the amp has been shut down due to excessive current. when this happens , i turn the volume down a wee bit and it comes back on. how can i cure this? cheers |
mine does this if engine isn't running but its fine when it is as it's the power its using when loud i.e not enough so cuts out so i'd say you need to up the battery or alternator etc

what amp? what gauge of cable?
|
the amp is a alpine v12 mrv-f545. not sure on the cable. its just a fusion wiring kit i bought from halfords years ago. the amp/cables have been in 4 off my cars with no problems. but in my new car i got some new comps up front. and this is when the problem started.

is it shorting and the protection circuitry cutting in..........also try running the ground straight from the battery to the amp bad connections don't suit these amps
|
Might be an idea to look at putting a capacitor in surely if the current is showing as too high? Im working more on Physics knowledge than ICE knowledge here tbh though.
|
it could also be down to the amplifier not being able to deliver enough current to the sub in bridge mode, try disconnecting the sub running the system if it does not cut out this is the problem what freq are you cutting the sub off at 80 or lower? if the sub is reaching xmax it can also give an over current fault.
forgot to say disconnect fronts then try it sub only |
What impedance are the new comps?? Would seem like a good place to look if thats when the problem started!
|
I would say put a volt meter on the +ve & -ve terminals and get a mate to turn up the volume. This will enable to see how much power it needs when cutting out.
Also its worth disconecting everything in turn to se where the problem lies. Also how do you have everthing wired up as the previous post says you could be overloading the amp with too much impediance. |
thanks for the replies. was planning on trying putting one thing on at a time today, but weather is ****e. hopefully try it tomorrow
