I work in Ashton-Under-Lyne, this has been pretty much all we've talked about today :thumb:

I heard the sirens on my way out of work last night but didn't pay much attention, until I got onto the M60 and saw the huge pall of smoke in the rear view mirror

njkmrs 23 April 2009 07:03 AM

One hell of a big mill too go up in smoke .
Was there only a couple of weeks ago getting a couple of kitchen worktops for someone .

Mr Miller is apparently a bit of a rogue .

He has already said he is not insured !!!! Due to his reputation no doubt uninsurable !!!!

Oh Dear,oh dear .

DCI Gene Hunt 23 April 2009 07:06 AM

He's a wide boy alright, but the local council have been playing dirty a lot longer than him in an attempt to get their hands on that mill. They've a 700 page plan to convert it to residential apartments, once they secure it back...... oh look it's on fire ;)

ScoobyDriverWannabe 23 April 2009 05:21 PM

:( I know a girl who lives opposite this.

She was evacuated from her house & wont be allowed back in it for at least a week. Shes due to give birth anyday as well.

The cynic in me tends to agree.

I personally I find it a shame that a 100+ year old building has such a demise. I love old architecture, whilst much of it has period asthetic detail, its design serves a purpose. Modern stuff, which can have as much detail and design, often seems to be designed as meerly as a token gesture for the sakes of trying to be fashionable.

However in retrospect, is its destruction in a "accidental" fire a godsave from it being butchered by converting it into "yet another" bygone ex-industrial-chic block of apartments?

Seeing the idea of converting old industrial buildings into residential apartments doesn't sit right with me, as it has nothing to do with the building's original purpose; I'd rather see it demolished.

The Chief 23 April 2009 08:30 PM

I drove past this, it was the biggest fire i have seen it was simply huge!!!!

Vance is alright - salt of the earth that man :thumb:
