what oil temp should I be seeing on high speed runs?
 

In the UK the oil gauge reads the expected 90
Now over in Germany getting temps of 100-105 0n regular 120mph -150mph runs
Is this normal...given the car is being pushed hard. Or too high end of story?

The oil is - Magnatec fully synth 5w 30. Worth changing?
Under bonnet temps are too hot for my liking and I am addressing this next week (direct cold air feed to the air filter and a heat shield around the turbo plus heat wrap)

Your thoughts and experiences of high speed runs welcome - especialy the oil temp situation.

Those temps. seem perfectly normal.
Magnatec 5w/30 is not fully synthetic, by the way, and if you regularly do those high speed runs, I would certainly change to a higher viscosity oil and preferably, full synthetic.

Thanks John....that is good to know. As you can tell I wasnt sure what was ´´normal´´ at those speeds. I regularly do those speeds on the autobahn....any recomendations on exactly what oil to use? Thanks Steve.

to give you an idea as i run a relocated oil filter and mocal oil cooler, my temps are under 70 just on a run and go upto 80 max

Anything over 115 degrees would have me thinking....
10W-40 would be fine.
Mine reaches 98 degrees on Elvington at a steady 130 mph.... but top mount oil cooler fitted today !

I used to regullary see temps of 100 or more but I got a ZEN oil cooler fitted and its hovering around the 80.s now :D

Just one thing to remember about fitting an oil cooler, come oil change time you also need to drain the oil cooler/hoses and the re fill them with fresh oil to do it properly.

If you think you don't need to bother draining cooler, think about how much old oil it holds (~1ltr..?)..!

I've looked into this and for me it's not worth it as I rarely do high speed runs and therefore oil rarely goes to 100c. If you're unsure fit a temp gauge first, then as banny says, then if you regularly start seeing 110-115c think about fitting one.

Just to add, doing sustained 130-150mph runs in a scoob (esp. with a TMIC) the oil temp is the last thing to worry about..!

i.e. Charge temperature!
With the TMIC, the temp. of the air entering the engine can rise dramatically on prolonged high speed runs. Worth keeping an eye on.
There was a group buy on charge temp. gauges from Harvey, a little while ago. May be worth investigating if there's any available!

I can see my STI 04 hit 100 deg when driving around town when the weather is reasonable. Doing about 80-90Mph on the motorway its steady around 96-98 deg.


Keep thinking if I should get an oil cooler fitted but not sure if the temps are reading a little high when in traffic as less air flow and I think my oil temp sensor is fitted on the block so might get a slightly higher reading than what the oil actually is?

These are the temps. I see, in similar circumstances, in my 03 STi
Using a good quality oil, they don't warrant the use of an oil cooler.

same temps here, 95 classic,oil filter relocated to behind drivers headlight.

i see temps normal driving of around 90,if in traffic 95-100

That's a very good point, there has to be a difference between a reading taken from the hottest part of the engine and one on airflow under the sump.

Personally, I'd rather know the temp at the hottest part, then you can't go wrong..;)

Ah glad mine are not out of the ordinary then ;) plus mine is modded a bit (340Bhp remap etc).

It's got Silkolene fully synthetic oil in it. Be interesting to see what the temp get to in the summer!

I would suggest that under 70degs is way to low. I don't start giving mine beans until it reaches 80degs.

I sort of agree, But i cant get mine much above 80c Generally while moving mine is at around 75 no matter how hard i drive it,measured above no 3 cylinder. It will go higher maybe 85 or nearly 90 once lol if sitting at idle for a long time.

Mines a standard engine modded to around 360bhp turbo ecu etc with no oil cooling mods

im using silkoline 10/50. gauge is only a cheapy and temp is measured from above no3 cylinder,but ive also measured temp using a digtal multi metre and the readings concur.

How you take a reading using a multi meter?

i get up to about 110 on track with std everything. When i go FMIC i think ill be going tmoc as ive seen on a couple of track cars to keep the weather good.

Can you explain that one to me !

If you have a decent one. It will come with a temp sensor that plugs in and the switch the dial to temp. Mines a robin ar4012
