gearbox and diff oil change!
 

i thought i'd put this out here before i give it a go!!!!!!!!!!

i want to change the gearbox and diff oils on my uk turbo (98) but i don't really know what fluid is best to use. i just wondered if anyone could shed a bit of light on this for me.

i also take it that to change the oils is a very similar way in which to do the engine oil i.e sump and filler ( obviously making sure that i can actually get the filler off first!!!!)

any help would be really appreciated

Pm oilman on here, what he doesnt know about oil isnt worth knowing;)

i used castrol syntrax gear oil which is 75/90

castrol syntrax. halfords do it.

Syntrax works very well in Scoobys, but you can get better

75w-90 Gear oil

Silkolene Silktran Syn 5 is great stuff if the gearbox is in good condition, if not any wear can become more obvious when using it. Motul Gear 300 and Redline Lightweight Shockproof are good if the gearbox has been showing some wear.

Hi Tim,

400 bhp, 2002 STI, what would help keep the gearbox healthy, does a bit of trackwork, but usually about 6000 miles a year total. I hope to "bodge" an oil cooler onto it during the year also.

Silkolene Syn 5 is a great choice if the gearbox is in good condition. Motul gear 300 is very similar, but it's better at covering up wear than the Syn 5. Amsoil also do a good one.

You have 3 Castrol Syntrax oils in the 75-90 section, which is best to use? In particular for my 99 Sti Ra Ltd, which has a Helical Front Diff (LSD I believe) and LSD in the rear diff as std. I have a post in another thread waiting for confirmation on this........... Anyone?

There is the Castrol Syntrax, Castrol SAF-XO and the Castrol TAF-X in that section. The one to go for is the Castrol Syntrax.

Will your Motul Motylgear 75W-90 Gearbox and differential lubricant Technosynthese - 1 Litre be as good as the 300? >Oilman<

Had intended to buy and collect at jap fest this sat but sadly cannot make it.. my friends will be there but wasnt sure if they could collect in my name ? :-/

No, the Motylgear isn't as good as the Gear 300. The Motylgear is a decent oil, but the Gear 300 is a proper top end, ester based oil.

Unfortunately the Japfest pre-orders have ended as the van is being packed at the moment.

Just changed the oil in my 2.5xt Foz.
It had been grinding going into 4th both ways for the last 30k.
Bought 2 quarts of redilne shockproof and topped up with 75/90, it now changes silky smooth even under hard acceleration.:thumb:

Someone put cheap rubbish gear oil in my old WRX and I had difficulty in engaging first sometimes, and it wasn't smooth at all.
Switched to Castrol Syntrax and the difference was night and day.
I've read brilliant reviews of Motul Gear 300 and Redline on Nasioc and MLR.
Just goes to show it's not worth skimping on gearbox oil! :)

Hi, can anyone please give me some advice about my 2006 Cat D Forester with genuine 7,000 miles. It had front damage (surprise!) which lifted and pushed back the engine 2 or 3 inches.
It jumps out of 5th gear with great force after being run at motorway speeds for 20 miles or so and does so continuously every few seconds until I stop and let it cool again.
I can run it around at 60mph without it happening at all.
Gears engage without problem and feel solid enough, but it's not possible to hold the gear in place when it goes.
The oil has never been changed and there are no signs of a leak

If you have a dccd gearbox do you need to put a limited slip differential in the gear box?

Oke thanks,but there is a lsd in the gearbox why not lsd oil?

I don't think you'd have any issues with the LSD version of the Gear 300, but we have had no complaints about the normal version and it's a lot cheaper. Not all LSDs need LSD specific oils.

the "correct" answer would be that it is not advisable use LSD oil in a synchro box as you will cause potential problems with both the change and can also cause additional wear on the synchro's

with a high quality synthetic gear oil it will cope with the DCCD loads no issue

I see this is an old post ... but i am wondering if you can help oil man.

I have a UK Turbo (99) and i am looking to replace the diff and gearbox oil.

The car has sit for around 2.5 years before i bought it, the car itself is spot on mechanical wise, the gearbox & diff feel good no knocks or bangs etc.

But with it sitting i want to change the oil in both.

Do you have any suggestions as when it comes to oil i have no idea.

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and diff.

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Red Line 75w-90NS and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal/Universal Plus, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives. The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Redline 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Amsoil FGR are also good choices.

Tim, Cheers for getting back to me i appreciate that. What would i get for around £50 - £75 for both the diff and box oil? or am looking at alot more. I ahve spent alot of money on the car rescently and i would prefer to keep the cost down if i can but i know it needs doing so will bite the bullet and folk out on the better stuff if needs be.

Just had a quick look on the site and out of the oil's you have available i have heard good things about millers/castrol/Gulf.

Out of the 3 which would you say is the best?

Just seems that there is not a massive difference in the prices thats all (unless i am getting the pricing all wrong haha).

What amounts do the diff and the box take?

Do you still get your 10% off for being a SN member if there is no deals on like on the gulf.

The Castrol is a good normal oil, but the Millers and Gulf are proper performance oils, so either of those would be my choice. Motul Gear 300 is another really good option.

You need 3.5L for the gearbox and 0.8L for the diff.

What oil would you recommend for a 2002 STi Bugeye? Oil and Diff.

85,000 miles and used as a road car with 3-4 track days a year.

After the best I can get which offers the best protection.
