Tips on removing classic MY99 dashboard (heater matrix) needed

Driving home from work today had a small puff of steam come out of the vents & windows misted up. Quickly sussed out that it looks like the heater matrix has started to leak. It's not completely buggered yet (carpets dry & coolant levels fine) but it's only a matter of time .

As the weather is set fare this weekend, I thought I'd start the task of removing the dash. I've done some searching and sent some PM's but just wondered if anyone has anything useful like an exploded diagram of the dash showing where screws/bolts are etc. Might save me an hour or seven. There doesn't apprear to be a manual around so I cannot :rtfm:.

Thanks in advance, I'm not looking forward to the job at all.:(

After a few patient hours I'm at this stage....

Still got to get to the heater matrix/exhanger yet but some water in central vents so something's not right in there.

Good effort, hope you get it sorted quickly and you get to the bottom of the problem:)

Simon, I've been over in Ireland (Under 14's rugby tour with Liam) all last weekend (Friday to Monday) so have not progressed too far. The new (2nd hand) matrix is in and the rebuild has started. All the labelling I did during the stripdown is so far making sense and in some perverse way I'm enjoying the challenge. I will be finished by the end of this coming weekend come rain or shine ;). Really miss driving the car so the 330bhp will be a nice surprise again :thumb:

Dean, I'm glad you are progressing well - good idea labelling, as there is nothing worse than an anonymous block connector !! Keep up the good work. I spent most of yesterday morning "upside down" in the footwell - connecting my boost gauge, all in order now - at last !! Hope the tour went well - must have been a cracker over in the Emerald Isle:thumb:

Well I've replaced a lambda sensor, intercooler hose, heater matrix and steering column (original had a worn barrel) plus stripped and cleaned my rear brakes this weekend!!!

The only downside is I buggered up the clock spring when connecting the new column to the steering rack. :nono: I got all excited and rotated the wheel a few times while lining up the column. Now the horn doesn't work and the airbag light is on. Now I should have checked the symptoms on the net first but I only went and removed half the dash again to check all the airbag connectors (which were all fine). Live and learn eh.

The task of swapping the matrix is easy enough but very time consuming. If your patient and have a few fine days then anyone that can weild a screwdriver or socket set will be fine......just don't ask me to do it for you :p

There's a flocked dash on Pistonheads. Get in there, it's a v5/6 one.

Good going Dean - I was tired enough after putting the boost gauge in:sleep: !! Nice one:thumb:

Had a quick look on Pistonheads in the Subaru Parts section and didn't see it there. I don't think I could get any enthusiasm to change it again though. ;)

All the work is done but how cheap is that flocked dash! Was expecting it to cost loads more.

Also that matrix is cheaper than the one I had from Grade A, a good find.
