Why do kids in Africa need a laptop each?

Eh? have read about this scheme at "give a kid a laptop" before but after seeing an advert for it, i thought WTF?

Not even in the UK does every kid have a laptop nor should they?

I hate all this ****e.

AndyC_772 17 April 2009 01:06 PM

That'll be the OLPC project, then.

Nice idea in principle, supposed to improve education standards and all that.

What they've failed to realise is that 'one supply of clean drinking water per child' would be much more beneficial and at much lower cost :(

Exactly, no one "needs" a computer we just rely on them because we're used to them. Absolute waste of money for a developing country!

They aren't second hand laptops, they are brand new eco/affordable yokes.

Charity starts at home and whilst the African government/dictatorship is on going i will not give to charity as its very much like pissing in the wind.

Apologies

Dedrater 17 April 2009 01:18 PM

Suppose they could use Google maps to find the nearest water hole?

:D

spireite 17 April 2009 01:24 PM

How else are they going to pay$$$$$$$$$$$$ into your ebay account :thumb:

davegtt 17 April 2009 01:25 PM

Second hand condoms would be more appropriate for a continent like that.

I am sorry but I really believe charity begins at home. This will just be another way of lining someone's pocket with our money.:Whatever_

Don't laptops need power / to be charged? These people don't have clean water, let alone electricity, or are we going to build them a power station too?;)

A friend has recently returned from one of the 'charity' trips to South Africa - you know the ones - he has to raise £5000 in sponsorship & gets to ride around on a dirt bike for 2 weeks. I refused point blank to pay for his holiday!:nono:

He then comes back with a great idea to go to his kids school and ask that every child should donate £8 which will give a child clean water for a year.

I pointed out that not every parent has £8 (or multiples of for more kids) spare to give away, which he found surprising! I suggested he go and speak to his rich business friends and ask them for the money!!

As I said at the begining, charity begins (and stays) at home!

It is so they can log on here and hate on IB and Pete also :)

SWRTWannabe 17 April 2009 09:10 PM

It might be one laptop per child, but it's still one copy of "Email Scamming for Dummies" between two ;)

EddScott 17 April 2009 09:39 PM

LOL, now you know who is sending you these 419 scams.

It woud appear that there isn't $30,000,000,000 waiting for you, but there is some skinny blick kid praying the greedy white geezer hands over his bank details.

Good luck to them :thumb:

for ****s sake, look at the kids with these laptops and see what they have, the square root of **** all and then add a cheap laptop. they are ****ing children and if it makes their lives that little bit more fun then i'm all for it. children grow up way too fast and what do most of these poor ****ers have to look forward to. let them enjoy and make of it what they can.

mykp 17 April 2009 11:48 PM

they need laptops so they can all get a basic education.

Once thats acheived the big corporates can move in with there call centre operations and exploit them even more than the other continents they've abused.

BTW: the phillipines is currently where its at as india is becoming too expensive.

dunx 18 April 2009 12:06 PM

L.O.L.

We have a secure room at work with a pile of brand new and unused laptops, complete with 3G dongles, all the parents have to do is turn up and sign for it.... Who comes, all the ethnic groups, the lazy white ***** can't be bothered to come unless the "social" pay for the taxi.

dunx

P.S. I agree clean water would be more use.
