Visual difference, Uk/Jap engine?

Picked up a 98 2000 awd at the start of the week and found in the service record that the engine was replaced by API a few years ago. Was told by the guy i got it off that it was a Jap engine that was put into it. Abit dubious about it, but how would i tell? Also if it is a Jap engine would that mean it would be out of a WRX?
Not very knowledgeable about Subarus so any help/pics etc would be great! :)

Cheers

If your UK car has had its original engine replaced with a JDM WRX engine of the same MY, then internally it's the same as the UK engine one. Just depends whether its own JDM 276bhp-rated WRX ECU is controlling it, or the original UK 208bhp-rated ECU still is.

However, of course, you may have an STi engine (and STi ECU) in there... :norty:

The engine code should be on a white sticker on the O/S cam chest cover... but who knows which engine that cam cover belongs too(?!).

AFAIK, there's no engine ID on the block itself - which is most annoying! :brickwall

Call David at API with the registration no and ask him what engine it's got in it?

Ahh i get it! Cheers for that! How would i know if its got a WRX ecu? Also if its been replaced with a standard uk engine, can i change the Ecu to a WRX item for more BHP?
Will try giving API a bell and see what they know about it. Cheers for the help. :D
