Number Plate question- legality of silver on black plates?

Whats the legal position with using silver on black numberplates?

The front plate has dropped off the horsebox, so am about to order replacements. As its dark green I reckon silver / black would look ace, but don't want to get pulled every five minutes...

Pre 73 only I think, mate of mine has one on a mk1 escort.

Its an age thing, I think pre 64 or something is legal, Nothing modern can display them legally.

Think the car has to be of an age where it had those plates in the first place.
