Difference between 1999 Impreza Turbo AWD and 1999 STI WRX

Hey peep,

I know this seems stupid, but does both these cars share the same engine and turbo? Is it just the ECU that gives the STI WRX more power? and has it got a prodrive ECU in it. I'm interested, if anyone knows
Thanks
Dan

The engine and turbo's are different for both cars, the STI has different pistons and some other differences, the intercooler and turbo are both different for instance and the ecu is different (and no, the STI doesnt have a Prodrive ecu, it has an STI ecu ;))
You also have a hardened cog set in the STI's gearbox, 2 pot rear brakes on some STI's. different diffs and more goodies ;) but its a loooooooong list to go through, the STI is more of an "uprated" vehicle over a uk classic basically.

Ok thanks for the info, only got my subaru last week, so still learning alot about it. I also saw someone selling a prodrive ecu and the label it had STI on it, so wasnt sure why. It was for the uk turbo 1999.

Its a Prodrive Performance Pack ECU, though they only work efficiently with the correct mods (ie the rest of the performance pack) and hate full decats.

Also to add...

Basically, you do have a regular MY99 WRX's (but not STi's) heads/block/internals. But you only have a small TD04 turbo (although your MY99 car does have 440cc injectors!) The UKDM ECU has been mapped for 95 RON, therfefore lower timing values. So the small turbo plus ECU's lower boost/timing are the reasons why the UKDM cars 'only' produce:-

MY93-96 - 208bhp; 201lb ft
MY97/98 - 208bhp; 214lb ft
MY99/00 - 215bhp; 214lb ft

That said, your turbo - although the limiting factor of your car's std hardware - can still produce around 280bhp i.e. the same as MY97-00 WRX, and v.3-6 STi, saloons!.. That is, if you fit a decat downpipe and get it remapped on 97/99 RON... :)
