Trip to collect new car (how far would you travel?)

I have finally found a replacement Scooby a 02 STI Prodrive style from Malky on here :)
It’s a bit of a trip to collect it but I can’t wait tickets are all booked for Thursday :luxhello:
I leave at 4.45am :cuckoo: to get me to Glasgow for 3pm.

House - Train Station 48 miles
Train to Paris 270 miles ish
Paris - Beauvais Airport 45 miles
Beauvais - Glasgow Airport 500miles ish
Glasgow - Plymouth 490miles
Plymouth - Roscoff 115miles
Roscoff - House (on some of the best roads I know :norty: ) 53miles

Total of 1521 miles :freak3:
543 miles of it in the new car can’t wait :D

Timwinner 24 February 2009 08:01 PM

For the right car I would go almost any distance. Its a pain in the back side for a day or so but you have the car for ages!!!

scoobyc 24 February 2009 08:04 PM

agreed :).

damn thats a long way!

Connor_scotland 24 February 2009 08:05 PM

Distance is no object for a car in my eyes

I did Inverness to Outside of London to get my previous previous car

Was a great journey

shaggy6 24 February 2009 08:05 PM

and i thought my 700mile trip was long!! hope youve got your ipod

GlesgaKiss 24 February 2009 08:06 PM

Almost 24 hours solid travelling? That's insane!

A worthy cause though. Lol

JonMc 24 February 2009 08:09 PM

Yes it is a long way, but if it's the right car it will be worth it. For the right car I would probably do the same.

AndyC_772 24 February 2009 08:13 PM

I'd travel a long way too - though it would have to be for a car I *knew* I wanted. The furthest I've actually done in practise is about 250 miles, but that was for a brand new car so I didn't actually need to see it first.

If I'd travelled that far for a s/h car and then found overspray, dodgy panel gaps or an engine with no oil in it then I'd be seriously p*ssed off...

Hey, looking at the pictures of his car, it'll be worth every minute. I sent him a message about the car, but you'd already snapped her up. She looks beautiful! Enjoy!!

I got a plane to exeter an drove back - 550 odd miles, the first scoob i looked at i drove to leeds -600 mile round trip. Didnt get the scoob thought engine had more oil on top and under neath it than in it, and something about finding a butchers meat cleaver in the boot put me off so that was a wasted journey

That looks absolutely mint! Not too far away from me if he's in Ayrshire; I'm in South Lanarkshire, and where I stay I'm equal distance from Edinburgh and Glasgow - about 30 miles, and south.

You should stay in a hotel: I've slept(tried to) in the car a few times, and they were not good nights!

+Doc+ 24 February 2009 08:40 PM

I bought my P1 from Nottingham, no way I could afford the petrol from Scotland :D

Weasel 555 24 February 2009 08:41 PM

Definitely worth the trip :D

funny thing is I have a mate in Portsmouth leaving fri nite by coach to dundee to go get a V2 RA :D

furthest i ever went was driving a 98 impreza from NYC to Tampa FL to get one of the 1st WRX's in USA then driving back to NYC with , atleast the 1k miles breakin was done by time I got to New Jersey LOLz

I flew up to Scotland (Ayr) from sunny Stansted on a Wednesday to view the Scoob. Then flew up the following week to collect it and drove it home that day. Think that works out about 1600 miles in total

GazTheHat 25 February 2009 02:23 PM

I booked a one-way flight from Glasgow to Nottingham to get my STi. It looked and sounded mint, so i hoped it was, otherwise i'd be hitching back up the M6. :D

Car was spot on and had a nice 300 mile drive home with a face like this: :D

With the cost of cheap flights in the country, no car should be out of reach.

lordretsudo 25 February 2009 02:40 PM

I bought my current Scoob from someone on here. I got a lift from Stockton to Darlington (about 10 miles) then the train from there to London (about 230 miles), one way. I was quite concerned about the whole business, as you're really putting yourself in a difficult situation if the car doesn't turn out to be as promised, plus it was the first time I've ever bought a car privately.

In my case it was well worth it, as I specifically wanted a white STI, after a couple of years with a blue STI. The one I bought was 2 years old, with 9k miles on it, had a free service remaining and was fitted with an upgraded stereo system. If I hadn't been willing to travel, there's no way I would have got a car like that in my area, given that there are only a handful of white ones in the country.

Hvaing said all that, a trip from France to Scotland for a (nearly) 7 year old car is something else again!

20withascooby 25 February 2009 02:58 PM

i drove 3 hours to see my car then 3 hours home, then went 3 hours back again next day to pick it up then 3 hours to bring it back

mr hat 25 February 2009 04:50 PM

so ur the lucky guy buying it. called malcolm today to be told guy from france coming tomorrow to see it, had my heart set on it and im in edinburgh so 40mins drive away, spotted it for sale as soon as it went on pistonheads but the time its taken to get a loan sorted out its too late. im gutted tbh.

According to Google maps I travelled 813 miles to collect my GTB and another 813 to get it home. Only had to drive the car 573 miles though;)

All within the UK and 813 miles was the shortest possible route;)

I win:hjtwofing

Trip home was fun, GTB was a good tourer.

As I've had mine seven years on the 1st of next month, you will love it. See seems to be immaculate, and with the addition of a Whiteline rear ARB and drop-links you will be very happy..... especially if they are rare in France (?)

Congratulations, and welcome fellow bug-eye owner !
