What i saw last nite was HIGHLY amusing, and shows why y'all should never take the piss out of other cars because you think they not as good as the almighty scooby...

Birmingham, the S bends, bout 11pm, various scoobies (mainly modded sti's with huge spoilers etc)coming round the roundabout at highly illegal speeds (IN THE WET), closely followed by black mini, scooby accelerating up dual carridgeway FAST, then, v loud vvv fast mini goes into the outside lane and blows em away bigtime! was mental.

Also in same place, silver Mk2 golf racing the above subarus and destroying them.

Was suprising, but very very funny and entertaining...

WAS IT YOU???

Yorkie 24 February 2002 07:26 PM

Looks like you had a very bad dream mate. Stick to Horlicks ;)

Andy Tang 24 February 2002 09:36 PM

I know there are some mk2 Golf's with the mk4 Golf turbo engine in them, and after a little work kick out 350-400bhp at the front wheels!!!

I guess traction control would be a good investment!!! ;)

Scooby-Doo 24 February 2002 10:33 PM

Mr Tang,

Are you considering the mod ? Is it 354bhp to beat ?

Spec 24 February 2002 11:21 PM

LOL!
I know my Mini has a better power to weight ratio than my Scoob, but in the wet! There's no comparison :)

JKJ2 24 February 2002 11:53 PM

OK, stop it right now. A Mini, even a very very very fast Mini, is not going to out drag a Scooby T of any description, on any type of road/corner, period.

What was the other car, a Golf !, 400bhp !, with "a bit of work"!, get a grip please, you would be talking millions to tune it to that spec, and it would probably self destruct 100m down the road.

This roundabout didn't happen to near a pub did it :)

Matt205 25 February 2002 12:20 AM

Don't want to Pee on your Bonfire mate but Gary Handa from the EVO forum has a MK IV Golf with a TT engine in it that before christmas was running 280 bhp. It has now undergone a full rebuild inc new Turbo, The target is around 420 bhp +

There are a few Videos for download on his site from the EVO runs.

www.handa.tv for his web site

Cheers

Matt

Matt205 25 February 2002 12:25 AM

Oh yer was doing 0 to 100mph in 12 seconds before christmas as well !

Matt

mattski2 25 February 2002 12:27 AM

The motor that the TT/Golf/Ibiza Cupra etc use is good for about 400bhp - in race spec, but it is *NOT* reliable and sensible for road use and costs a fortune.

If I remember correctly I think that about 280bhp is the safe, sensible amount that can be grabbed without major major cash and work. Oh, and then it'll probably be going through the front wheels ... torque steer and wheelspin central anyone? ( my Cupra 1.8T was bad enough with 156bhp, the guys running 210bhp said it was on the virge of being undrivable ).

M

Matt205 25 February 2002 12:35 AM

well at 280bhp it seemed very calm and subdude, and required very litte fighting to keep under control, he does have every electronic gadget known to man on it!

Been on a few meets with him

Matt

JKJ2 25 February 2002 12:37 AM

Sounds a bit of a beast Matt, and as said, no question it, and no doubt hundreds of other amazing conversions can be done, but, Audi TT engine!, fully rebuilt!, new turbo!, £££, what on earth's the point in a FWD Golf MkIV, wheeeeeelspin, and going nowhere.

Matt205 25 February 2002 12:49 AM

upps double post !

[Edited by Matt205 - 2/25/2002 12:52:27 AM]

Matt205 25 February 2002 12:50 AM

Oh yer I'm with you on that one ! Don't quite see the point may self but the man has money to burn and burn it he does, he was talking about a quattro system but the power/transmision loss's are stupid !

He has race logic traction control with launch start which works wonders and I think it talks to the variable LSD he has ???

Matt

JohnBarnesAndHisGloves 25 February 2002 01:36 AM

Saw it with my own eyes ladies n gents, scoobies were comin round the roundabout FAST, ass hangin out, would gain a little ground on both the golf and the mini, but theyd soon power past, happened a few times each, so no fluke.

Anybody seen the dark green/black (?) rear engined ford rst powered mini??? maybe it was that, wasnt close enough to tell.

Oh, BTW, i was hada 'mare, wasnt s bends (everyones old haunt, but poop now), its the dual carridgeway near brum fc footy ground.

Y'all live in such denial that lesser cars can be modified to win, there was a tvr engined saff and a supercharged v8 mk1 escort there too if u REALLY wanted to loose...

JohnBarnesAndHisGloves 25 February 2002 01:44 AM

Lets not have a big argument over this tho, ive got a scooby now (had it for nearly a month now, std UK 5dr turbo, own 3 other cars tho), so i wasnt having a go at scoobies, merely showing (to the people who seem to think a scooby is untouchable, not all of you, jus a few), that you can be humbled by 'lesser' cars, so watch out (or modify you cars bigtime! i prefer that idea...!).

cheers

JKJ2 25 February 2002 02:30 AM

Good to see you own a Scooby, the main thing you will find is that your car will perform and perform and perform, and be totally reliable.....unlike the RST Minis, converted Golfs etc, which will vanish at a reasonable pace, probably only once or twice, down the road and more than likely into the nearest garage for their engine rebuilds. Enjoy your motor, you're right they aren't always the fastest, but they are probably the most consistently fast cars, and I never had anyone give me the thumbs up in my MkIV Golf :).

Sure Mike Rainbirds dyno proven 500bhp+ cossie has covered 15k+ and dont forget the Reyland cossie (one that did 188mph proven) has done numerous top speed runs with no probs. If this cars you refer to are built correctly ie proper internals and cooling and not just turned up boost jobbies then there aint any reason why thet wont last if properly serviced.

Dream Weaver 25 February 2002 08:58 AM

Here we go again - the Scooby defense :( JKJ - why can you not accept the fact that Scooby's are good, but they are not the only car in the world. You need a love for performance cars in general, and not just one marque.

I know some small FWD and RWD cars that can equal Impreza's for handling, power, speed and delivery. Just ask John Felstead :D:D

Diablo 25 February 2002 10:01 AM

Gotta love this

Regardless of whether or not JB and his gloves (wft is that all about?)has been hallucinating, its not impossible

Once moving, wet or dry, my out the box Integra will be quicker cross country than my out the box UKMY99 4door Turbo was.

Traction, no contest, Scoob has it.

Had an original mini for years. At 1100 cc with admittedly lots of bits, it was the measure of the Xr2's (crossflow and CVH) at the time. For about £2k of todays money..LOL...

There are some mental minis out there, with big cc 16 valve engines putting out a reliable 160 - 180 bhp. Once the traction defecit was removed, power to weight and power at wheels would be absolutely no contest in favour of the Mini. Bloke near me used to have a road legal front wheel drive 16 valve turbo mini.

So, FFS, Scoobs are good, but not unbeatable.

D

tonyk 25 February 2002 10:12 AM

Also dont forget that a standard uk scoob turbo model will only be putting around 150@wheels out which aint that quick and as the guy above said once the cars are moving it could be all over for the scoob, if the mini had 150@wheels it would be seriously quick once it got traction.

juan 25 February 2002 10:29 AM

look stop arguing with JKJ2. He has the fastest car on the planet full stop!

Andy Tang 25 February 2002 10:47 AM

Why are some people so willing to dismiss that some cars are faster than theirs???

Maybe the same people that said that over 350bhp from a UK engine with standard internals wasn't possible!! ;)

You may have a £20k car, but there are people who have spent over £20k modifying their cars, be it a Golf, Renault 5, Cosworths, etc.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but some have incredibly fast cars!

ScoobySnack 25 February 2002 10:52 AM

Could be that the other drivers were just better ( or taking more risks) ..........

I was aware of a Golf GTI and its driver that could humble my Scooby without even trying ......... :)

J

DavidRB 25 February 2002 10:56 AM

Talking about the reduction in power to the wheels because of 4WD is to miss the point. While cornering, the 4WD car can put twice as much power down as the FWD car because it can share the load across all four tyres.

If it's one thing that Scoobies can do better than most cars, it's accelerate around roundabouts and out of bends. Once in a straight line, then it's open season for the big bhp boys. ;)

NeilT 25 February 2002 10:59 AM

arent we all forgetting something here - the driver!

a poor driver in a Subaru will almost always be taken by a good driver in almost anything else. The Driver makes the car not the other way round... ;)

mattski2 25 February 2002 11:13 AM

heh, this is funny... What I find interesting is that people feel the need to have a pop at Impreza's with a Golf, Mini, whatever. Why do you suppose that is?

I know there are quicker cars than Impreza's, so what, who cares! The car is a good all-round performance car, simple as that, and I must admit I can't see the point of spending thousands on a Golf or whatever... just not my logic I guess.

Personally I am happy with my car, I know it's quick but also know that there is quicker (got shown a clean pair of heels by an Astra in my old WRX, would like to see it go round bends, in the wet etc tho ;) )

There seems to be this anti-scooby sentiment lingering around at the moment, why? Of course there will be pro-Subaru feelings and comments on here, it's SCOOBYnet FFS, the same loyalty will be seen on every other car BBS - cars are very close, personal things and of course we will think they are good, wouldn't have bought them otherwise would we.

I think (as far as I am concerned) there is one word that shuts most people up and that is Skyline, and even then there is quicker.

Actually, good question for GT-R owners... do you get people having a pop at your car either in real life (i.e. nova's trying it on) or on your BBS etc?

M

Andy Tang 25 February 2002 11:27 AM

I'm not having a pop at Subaru owners. I was one for nearly three years with two different cars, and like to think I took my car to some serious tuning limits!

But to talk down other cars without knowing the ability of the driver or the modifications to the car seems a bit off!

You'd expect the same respect when people talk about you and your car!

Andy Tang 25 February 2002 11:28 AM

I appreciate this is a Subaru forum, but then someone has started a topic and wants replies!

And to be honest I was sick of seeing the usual "That couldn't happen" comments, especially when I know there are some seriously tuned cars out there, that aren't Subaru's! God forbid I should mention them on a SCOOBY forum!

Look at the stir caused by Driven, when they say there is a better car than the Subaru!!

Get a grip it's only a car and there will always be better ones!

mattski2 25 February 2002 11:41 AM

who said you where having a pop Andy? It wasn't pointing toward you, it was pointing toward a fairly recent trend of trying to rubbish the cars (IMHO that is).

Of course there are cars better than Subaru's, lets face it, they are pretty cheap for what they are. It just annoys me when people appear to get a great deal of pleasure from the fact that a Subaru got 'beaten' by something like a Golf, big deal!

You would think that some peoples life revolves around 'beating' Impreza's ;)

M

Andy Tang 25 February 2002 11:46 AM

Well it seemed that my previous (Suburu owning) life, was to try and get the biggest BHP on standard UK internals!! ;)

Buying a house soon kicked me into touch!! :(

I'm just happy to have shown up some tuned Japanese cars in my time!! ;) :D
