Mapping my own ECU?

I'd really tempted to have a go at mapping my own ECU. I've got the required tools (Det Cans and Wideband/RPM/Boost datalogger) and have a good understanding of EMSs and the physics involved with IC engines (from reading a book by Jeff Hartman).

Only problem is i've never mapped and engine before (let alone a boosed engine) and don't have any specific AFR/Timing targets for my car. I do however have a base map to work on which is built into my Power-FC.

I know its going to be a bit of trial and error but i'm unsure how narrow the margin are between error and catastrophe :brickwall

Any help/advice from anyone in the know would be greatly appreciated :)

Yeah, the thread title is something you HAVE to get right 1st time for it to be displayed as you want it to, in the correct forum section. :brickwall

Weirdly though, when you do edit it, then the changes show up okay once the thread is opened... but still NOT in the forum section's list of threads  :wonder:

In software programing terms, that's called a feature.;)

If you really want to map your own car, take the time to read the romraider forums. Make small changes, do some driving and logging (while keep an ear open for det on the cans). Review the logs and make sure it all looks good. Be especially careful with making large changes to the AVCS maps if you have them. Good luck.

hmmm strange :wonder:.. sounds like the database could do with a bit of normalization

All i've ever been told is PUSH the TIMING (not to far) and listen to DETONATION once you know what it sounds like you will know what to avoid.

Also i would try asking Simon = www.jolliygreenmonster.co.uk on a few tips....try not to ask him to much as he is a mapper himself and you obviously wouldn't want to offend people who could help you in the future with your own car.

GHood Luk hehe :lol1:

Yeah thats right, the optimum is apparently to achieve maximum cylinder pressure at 15 degrees passed top dead center. The only problem is the flame burns a different speeds depending on a huge list of parameters and theres no way of measuring cylinder pressure :wonder:

I wasn't sure about contacting mappers for advice. I don't have any plans to become a mapper so they shouldn't have anything to worry about but i'd totally understand if they wanted to keep their information to themselves. I'll see how far I can get on my own and maybe ask if I get completely stuck.

Thanks, i'll need all the luck I can get :D
