Leak from power steering

Have quite a big leak from around the pump.

Is this a common weakness or have I just been unlucky.

Here are some pics maybe someone could point out problem area to check:wonder:

is there anything that could be loose that I cant see as the puddle on top of the engine does stink when it gets hot.

Syph 22 February 2009 01:14 PM

Ok I removed the header tank today to have a good look for a leak.

made a huge mess!!!

couldnt see anything obvious so I cleaned everything up and put some gasket seal around the 'o'ring and hope for the best. should be able to tell where the leak is coming from now (I hope).

Fingers crossed, Ive fixed it.

mine was like that and i looked everywhere for problem
turned out to be res cap had cracked and it was that leaking fluid

Syph 22 February 2009 01:40 PM

I`ll keep an eye on that. I hope its that simple.

Thanx.

RedScoob 22 February 2009 01:42 PM

I have the same problem... Has adding sealant worked, Syph?

Syph 22 February 2009 01:49 PM

dont know yet, only done it today.

i will know in a day or so.

My tank is always wet with fluid - isn't this normal? Doesn't it happen when cornering hard?

Had it on my Clio 16V too.

Syph 22 February 2009 01:56 PM

I have to top up my fluid on a weekly basis. I dont think that this is normal.

LOL. No, quite.

Yeah, either big split in a pipe or reserivoir leak... Or - not what you need - a leaking rack!

i think it is a quite common problem, all the people i know who have had a early classic have suffered with it, cured ours by putting a legacy reservoir on

Syph 23 February 2009 07:27 AM

well its not th rack thats leaking as the fliud was sitting on top of the engine.

might consider the lagacy tank tho if i havent fixed it that is.

PS Fluid leaks are common from the reservoir bottle.

Fluid usually either leaks out of the o ring seal between the pump and the reservoir, or from the wire that comes out the back of the pump.

Beardy 23 February 2009 10:47 AM

mine has same prob atm. Think it is the gasket leaking on mine.

Wire from the back of the pump?

I`ll have to look at that. Cant say I noticed any wires.

Mine is leaking too, I'm looking at getting this

Subaru power steering Pump Kits / Impreza / 93-98

Hopefully it will cure the leak on mine and I guess I might as well rebuild the pump at the same time.

Ady.

I fear I have made the leak bigger. I certainly havent fixed it. Im gonna try a larger section 'o'ring and try fettling the mounts to make the resivoir sit a bit closer to the pump.

Syph 05 March 2009 09:58 PM

Ok so I fitted a slightly larger cross section 'o'ring on the header tank, removed the sandwich plate and cleaned everything up.

I tweaked the mounts to put a bit more force on the gaskets.

Refitted everything after cleaning the block to make sure I could spot anymore leaks.

Topped up the pump and blead the system by steering from lock to lock untill the bubbles stopped.

Everything looked good until I went out fo a drive and pushed it a bit well a lot actually. There was so much smoke I thought I'd buggered my engine. It turned out that nearly all the new fluid had left the pump and poured all over my nice clean engine and run down onto the exhaust heat shield.

I have now taken delivery of another pump. I do hope this one doesnt leak.

so my advice to anyone else who has a leak from their pump is to replace it before they make a massive mess or like me, make things worse.

Just wish I'd seen the tech section on fitting a version 3/4 pump before I got my new one. :(
