Possible Virus ?? Advice ?

Hi guys ,

Quick question for those in the know !

My brother complained his pc was acting sluggish and asked me to take a look at it the other night

I cleaned it up a bit , ran ccleaner , fixed registry , defrag etc and its much better now

Only thing is I noticed his AVG definitions were out of date

I tried to update but kept getting a failure error , also tried doing a on line scan with trend micro but it took forever and then just hung in the end

I also noticed when I checked his security settings etc in IE that his privacy settings were set to accept all cookies i.e slider was set all the way down

He assured me that he had never adjusted them himself and to be honest he wouldn't really be inclined to change them normally :Suspiciou :Suspiciou :Suspiciou

I had to leave it the other night as I didnt have too long to stay there but am gonna finish it off tomorrow night on the way home from work

Any recommendations ?

thanks for any suggestions :)

Go to

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Open Hosts (there is no file extension) with Notepad, delete everything downwards from

127.0.0.1 localhost
Do not reboot, this should now allow you to update the virus signature files and do online scans

will that work for me too?

Try it, if you are not able to update definition files and such like, that is the first thing you would do.

Try everything you have done again, but in SAFE MODE with NETWORKING.

When you save, select File and Save. Do not select "Save As"

Thanks guys

I allready had a look at the hosts file and there is no other entry except 127.0.0.1 localhost

I'll try safe mode :)

I can't manually update either :)

I think I might just try reinstalling it again too
