Printers - Epson R800 to Canon Pixma MP980
 

Just wondering if anyone has used / owned both? My R800 has finally bitten the dust after four years and I'm now looking for a similar replacement. The Canon seems to get good reviews and has a host of features which the R800 didn't have.

I print mainly A4 colour photos for mounting with a good few B&W prints, which is why I was considering the 980 for it's performance with grey tones. The WiFi, decent scanner and cheaper ink seem plus points as well.

Should I stick with another R800 or can the 980 match it? Thoughts appreciated from users of both.

The Gadget show did an extensive test of a few brands of inkjet printer and canon came ontop for price per print and quality. So I would say go with the Canon. I currently own a MP600R and have found it brilliant.

I've recently got a A3 Canon IX4000 and it's all looking good so far.

The Canon Pixma printers produce some stunning photo prints.

Canon every time for me now.

I have a MP970 which replaced my dead i965

(note that MP970 is a 7 colour ink printer and MP980 is a 6 colour ink printer - the latter uses smaller capacity CLi-521 cartridges, which is why they appear cheaper to buy).


Print quality is spot on, colours are good. Only issue is on cheaper photo papers you can see pass lines on black areas (might realign the head see if it improves it).Otherwise does what it says on the tin, I'm happy with it.

Just four criticisms really:

Normal/draft print is slower than the i965.

Scanner is a bit diaspointing, both orginals and with negatives - the scanner on our works epson CX11NF is superior.I don't use it much so not too bothered - I might have to play with ICC profiles to see if I can improve it.

Its big, and heavy (bear in mind I had a i965 before)

The feed rollers leave indentation marks on photo paper (i965 did this too, but it wasn't as noticeable).

Thanks all, I set up the 980 today and tried out a few test prints. I'd say it's just about the equal of the R800, in B&W anyway with the 980's gray cartridge.

I'm not too fussed about the size / weight as the Wi-fi works really well, after a few hiccups anyway, and I can now clear some desk space by moving the printer well out the way.

I'll need to try out a few A4 colour prints before I can really compare it to the R800. It will be a herd act to beat, so here's hoping.

Like the LCD display, very well thought out.
