Dell warranty - anyone taken it out

Mine expired in January and Dell have only just decided to email me to let me know of their 'discounted' warranty offers.

My laptop was £600 ish so considering whether to take warranty out or not. £93+vat for one year all the way upto £173+vat for 4 years.

4 years works out at £200 but at least guarantees the laptop for another 4 years. A fair whack of money but not owned a Dell before so don't know how long they stay trouble free for. Might be worth £200 to have it protected for 4 years as it's only £50 a year basically.

Anyone else bothered or had theirs for 4+ years error free?

Personally I'd not go with one.

Major points of failure on a laptop are Hard-Disk & PSU.

Both of these are available for £40-50 each - that's IF they fail.

If a bigger fault occurs (screen / mobo) then you should be covered under sales of goods act for about two years as the goods "should be expected" to last that long - given their high original cost price.

I'd rather put the money towards a new machine!

The video card is the worry on mine although my laptop model wasn't included in the free extended warranty. Dell for some reason don't think the 8600MGT on mine isn't an issue even though the same card in other models is covered.

The extended warranty as far as I know only addressed a particular card with a heat & voltage problem.

Yes it was allegedly the 8600mgt which is what is in mine but was never listed under the extended warranty. Surely if it's an 8600mtgt then it is the same as any other 8600MGT in the other Dell models?
