Any solution recommendation that isn't log me in or vnc?

Do you want to use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) or Virtual Network Computing (VNC) protocol specifically?

RDP to Vista is disabled (Microsoft restriction) but it can be enabled with a script which you can find here:

Ubuntu has TSclient which you can get for other Linux dists.

I RDP to my big machine (Vista Ultimate so has RDP out the box) from a laptop for apps that are installed on there.
After installing Linux on said laptop, was looking for a client that didn't require anything further on the "server".

I'll try the other two (thanks guys) but Dedrater's recommendation was a good one.

ive aslo used rdesktop for RDP and it works well.. I've also done the equivalent of seamless apps which worked well.
