AVG has trouble removing things when nothing else is running, so I have my doubts. Avast is a better bet.

You could also try Nod32. It's not free, but it does have a 30 day free trial. ESET - Antivirus Software with Spyware and Malware Protection

Malwarebytes.org

This is very very good, I've just used it tonight to clear 44 infected files from my system. :)

I know mate, used it myself but it wont remove trojan.

stiscooby 05 February 2009 07:24 PM

Try the online Kaspersky Scanner.

AVG is pants as is Norton ;)

Can you delete the folder/file if you boot to Safe Mode, or are other files also infected?

bioforger 05 February 2009 07:35 PM

No Beal. Malwarebytes will remove most trojans, you just need to use it in safemode. Done this myself on mates PC's.

Thanks for all the advice lads.:thumb:

bioforger 05 February 2009 08:57 PM

F8 on startup mate, u will see the menu option for safemode then.

scoobymad555 06 February 2009 02:32 PM

kaspersky online :)

btw, what trojan is it? - if it's "vundo" there's several utils specifically for dealing with it ..... it can be a s0d :(

I use Spybot Search & Destroy (The home of Spybot-S&D!)

and Ewido Anti-Spyware (ewido Anti-Spyware 7.5.1.43 - vnunet.com)

Two great products and have worked fine for me so far, also helps to have a decent antivirus program (I use NOD32).

slowbloke 07 February 2009 12:34 AM

try spy bot or adaware se seem to both do the job andboth free
if usin spy bot update it and imunize it then scan comp
hope this helps

Glad to here you got it sorted mate, can anyone advise me just what I need to press to get xp into this safemode and once there is it just the safe mode itself I select or safe mode with networking or whatever it is you have the choice off ??
would you say it is better to do all virus / trojan scans in this safe mode or is it just a case off it will only allow you to remove some trojans etc in safe mode but full windows mode will still detect them also but not allow you to remove ??

bit confused ??!!

bioforger 08 February 2009 05:23 PM

F8 jono. Press it repeately so you don't miss the small window u have to press it, so just after your PC has posted(booted) start pressing it.

You just need safemode.

jono300 11 February 2009 07:39 PM

Would you say that if after running a full kaspersky scan, superantispyware and malwarebytes programme scan and finding nothing my pc is considered pretty well safe ?? have heard that some virus programmes only become active when the programme is actually started up ?? ie. you could scan a newly downloaded file and it is clean but run the programme and it could come up as a virus - the virus only opens when the file is opened or run ??

if all downloaded programmes etc have actually been opened at some stage prior to running a full av scan, will the scan normally show anything untowards that is lurking on the pc ??

lastly- thanks for the info re getting into safe mode on xp, would you say it is better to do all virus etc scans in safe mode then ??

bioforger 11 February 2009 08:39 PM

Yep pretty much :)

Well most decent malware/av apps should detect any rogue files, without them being run or being memory resident when you do a scan.

Yea pretty much all trojan/virii rely on the user executing/running them. That's why you should have decent AV and/or anti malware running all the time, to stop you from doing so. Or just scan everything you dload before you open/run it. Common sense.

You only need to do it safemode to remove any infections, as alot of them are wise to AV/malware apps running and block them from doing anything, or they reload themselves into memory before or after a reboot. Some modify the registry also. I usually scan in Windows.

Some virii/trojans are very nasty n require other methods to remove though. Safemode won't cut it in thoses cases.

Also some websites exploit JAVA code, so make sure u have the latest JAVA updates if you use it.

jono300 11 February 2009 10:45 PM

Thanks again for the info, bit wiser now !!!

jono300 13 February 2009 12:08 AM

Just wonder seem to remember a setting within windows that you could turn on / off to stop certain deleted files autmatically comming back - like an auto restore ??

seem to remember a good while ago being advised to turn it on / off - cant remember now ??!! ring any bells with anyone ?? was a feature off windows as opposed to an actual av add on or anything.

bioforger 13 February 2009 07:48 PM

Not sure what you mean. System restore? Recycle bin properties?

Deleted files will not return unless you restore from an earlier store point, which still had an infection. I guess that's what you mean. I would keep it on to be honest. As you know your PC is clean, you could save a store point now and delete all the other store points.

Or even better image your HDD to a backup drive or DVDR's using Symantec Ghost.

jono300 13 February 2009 10:32 PM

Yep okay thats fine mate, to be honest not 100% what I am talking about so will just shut up now !!

must be getting mixed up thou ?? as I say thou sure it was something to do with a setting within windows that you switched on / off once you had done a virus scan / virus removal to actually prevent the file / programme ?? automatically comming back on once you re-booted the pc.

anyway as you say all fixed now and must admitt upon taking your advice off running the malwarebytes programme in safe mode it found the trojan and that was it gone !!

stangely enough the file download where I strongly supsect the trojan came from was scanned for virus / trojans with kaspersky at the time off download and nothing was detected but found with malwarebytes so again excellent programme and thanks for recommending it..finally something that works !!!

bioforger 13 February 2009 10:42 PM

Maybe you mean in Windows Defender, you can quarantine/block apps in it. It's Microsoft's attempt at anti malware. But it's cack.

Kapserky is rated as one of the better antivirus apps, but you had a trojan which doesn't fall into that group. That's why u have to run antimalware apps as well.
