Has anyone bought any double glazing recently? Cost?

Have had a quote for my house. Consisting of 2 front door, 1 rear door, sliding patio doors and 7 windows, the quote started as it does at £5800, they have now offered after lots of phone calls, the whole job all in for £4k. Does this sound reasonable to you, first time for me buying things like this.

The company is Crystal Windows and have been trading for years.

Colour makes a big difference as does the style of door, and any lead etc.

We have dark wood effect outside and white inside, and it costs about 25% or something like that. But I wanted to keep the house as it looked rather than someone who installed the cheapest double glazing going.

I'd suggest 4k was pretty good.

This is just for white UPVC, no lead as I'm not keen on that tbh.

Not sure where you are, but I have always used Window Warehouse in Colchester, never had any problems and they are very reasonably priced.

I'd definitely get a couple of quotes and I'm sure at the moment you should be able to haggle a bit.

This is my only quote, just wanted to know how it compared up, as I cant stand getting quotes for this kind of thing, and really dont have the time either.

A few years ago I got some in to quote ..... with the words, "You have 30 minutes and your first quote is your last"

It focuses their minds quite remarkably :D

I know what you mean about getting quotes from this indusrty.

I use a local firm (glass northampton), who have been about years and as long as I order 2 windows at a time don't charge me any more for fitting from the original quote. Best of all they don't try and sell me stuff.

get another quote, we had THREE to start with then had five in total, then when you see the different quality products people show you, you need to see more.

We ended up using Anglian last year/18months ago, their price came in about the same as two other companies so we knew we'd got about the correct price, but their product was so much better than the others and also had a 25year guarantee too, the glass is ARGON filled as well :)

might be worth giving tem a call to compare, not all PVCu windows are the same.

Window Warehouse just come round and price up the job. :thumb:

It's impossible to say whether £4k is a good price or not when there are so many variables, such as window quality, window size, number of opening windows, how many skylights etc.

Quality of product and installation is key. We just had some DG and a conservatory fitted late last year and could have got it quite a bit cheaper.
See what profile they are using and then do a google. Also see if they are welding or mechanically joining the frame.
I believe mechanical joints are best because they are stronger as the internal strengthening bars are not cut and don’t weaken the frame. (They have to cut welded frames)
If they are welded make sure they only 'v' cut and not 'Y' cut the joints. ‘Y’ cuts generally mean they are making your frames with all the off-cuts.

I have some links on my other PC if you want them. :thumb:

Ask around, recommendations are best.
