is there too much packaging on products?

just answered the door to a delivery person and got handed a huge box which felt empty. i was pretty confused as i haven't ordered anything big. anyway i opened the box and found a saw but look at the size box it arrived in

just the one item in the box and it took me ages to find it :p

I would suggest that is over kill, something strange about a saw being over packaged in a wood byproduct too.
Look at this
The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations 2003

Thats the law!!!!!!! (ish)

Its one of those things that should be so easy to complain about, but obviously red tape prevails

This happened to a package that my son got, you wouldn't believe the amount of packaging on it!

Mind you, he was playing Pass the Parcel!

Does seem a large box for the product but probably doesnt cost them anymore to send it. I would guess they are charged by weight rather than dimensions.

If they sell alot of varying sized products, im guessing it wouldnt be cost effective to have a box made specifically for that saw and they would use whatever they have in stock.

If all they did was sell saws, im sure they would have something designed to suit but you cant possibly hold a box in stock specifically designed for every product you sell, especially if you sell lots of different shaped items.

It's beacuse suppliers can't stock an infinite number of different box sizes. Instead they stock a small variety and find the closest match for the item(s) and then fill the rest with packing, usually air filled polythene strips these days. Had a similar sized box earlier in the week with 2 router bits in it.
